RD MANOHAR

RD MANOHAR, a Civil Engineering

post graduate from IIT Kanpur, has more
than 30 years experience as a Professional
Engineer. He has an excellent academic
record and was a University Rank Holder.
Started his Career as a Teacher at an
engineering college in Bangalore and ran
coaching classes for Engineering students
for a decade. In his first enterprise, he
worked as Architectural Engineering
Consultants for Private Developers in
Bangalore, University of Gulbarga,
Karnataka Housing Board, Chemical
Treatment plants and Large Industries,
Interiors for MNC's, Office and Show Room Interiors. Key Speak In his
second enterprise the team have been successfully handling projects of a
wide scope starting from Individual Bungalows to Medium sized
Apartments, Commercial Complexes, Private Hospitals, and Show
Rooms.
He started off the seminar by quoting “Architectural marvel are always
structural wonders” cause they are interconnected.
He gives his views on the famous
architectural projects around the world and
how they could have been designed better.
The 1st example is the falling waters by
Frank Llyod Wright, and he says it is a
marvelous creation in the universe, but its
failed in thinking about the structural impact
that would be on the building if the slabs are
cantilevered so long. It has failed to stand
the tests of time and how later architects and
engineers have put in a lot of work to keep
the structure standing till date.
The 2nd example is the opera house by
Santiago Calatrava. He explains increasing
cantilever and projections in each floor is
putting a pressure on the foundation and
how huge winds is causing a impact on the
building.

The 3rd example is the helix bridge .

The helical bridge which is
structurally intriguing and a
architectural marvel
He then talks about his designs by first explaining about the
1. Load logic – transfer of loads
2. Span logic – slab and beams
3. Colum sizes – residential n apartment columns
CANTILEVER WITH CORE
is a 3 floor building with a central
core which carries load on either side based on the slab cantilever
direction.
ROOF ON GLASS
Glass supports on either sides
and structural support in the
middle cause of cantilever and
there is no loads on glass

FLOATING DINING TABLE

Cantilever takes up all the loads from the left and right expansions and
directs the loads to the core

His inspiration to design cantilevers were from a tree, from nature. he

says the branch is bent to the left for about a length of 8m, and how its
hanging there cause of interconnection between fibers inside the tree
that acts as steel .
Whatever designs he has done are an inspiration from nature
AR SRIVIJI NACHIMUTHU
Ar. Sriviji Nachimuthu ,She is an
Associate Architect and Studio Head at
Wallmakers, Bangalore . Also Principal
Architect and Founder of Studio D’ Nachi
from 2015. Her works specializes in
Sustainable and Earth Architecture,
catenary structures and product design.
She gained her Bachelors in Architecture
from Anna University, Chennai, in 2011
and Masters in Design from Domus
Academy, Milan, Italy.
She has been a visiting professor in Karpagam University for 4 years
and Assistant professor in REVA University for over 2 years, teaching
across disciplines like Architecture, Product Design and furniture,
accessories design and Interior Design.
She starts with telling us how she's experimental with architecture and
sustainable materials.
This is the first place she
worked, stayed and
experimented with materials.
They have used compressed
carton boxes with plastic lining
for walls, ladders, tractor trolly for base & different recycled materials
Projects from wallmarkers
1. Based in Kerala, floating roof in a different
way using Mangalore tiles and lights are
playing a major role in this kind of shell roof
structure
2. This project is based in kochi, made using rammed earth, CACB blocks,
GI pipes for the window grills and handrails sourced from the scrapyards.
Beautiful flow of building allowing light and ventilation

CHAIRS
She explained about the history of most iconic chair designs by great
people

BENTWOOD WASSILY CHAIR CESAR CHAIR THE CHAIR

ARMCHAIR OAK & CANE
BARCELONA CHAIR THE EGG CHAIR EAMES LOUNGE
CHAIR & OTTOMAN

Next, She gave us an exercise on how the following chairs might

function, and how differently they are all designed

ACHILLE DO HIT ME CHAIR PRATONE - GUFRAN

CASTIGLIONI - DROOG
-ZANOTTA PRIMATE

SELLA SWISS MILKING HIKING- MONOPAD INACTIVE CHAIRS

-ARCHILLE STOLL STOOLS BENOIT MALTA
She lastly explains how ergonomics is important based on the human
body and its implications might be severe , so design considerations
must be taken beforehand
RAHUL BHAUMIK
Rahul bhaumik, architect and designer,
faculty of pes university.
He starts off the presentation by asking us
what we know about AI/VR in
architecture and design
He further explains about them step by
step.

AI
how can we define “Intelligence”?
Intelligence can be explained as mental capability that involves the
ability to reason, to plan, to solve problems, to think abstractly, think
creatively, to comprehend complex ideas, to learn quickly and to learn
from experience.
Going on to the key factors of “Intelligence”, that are Learning and
Decision Making and explains how important they are.
Next he asks , What is “Artificial Intelligence”?
Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes
by machines, especially computer systems. AI finds applications in
several domains like- expert systems, natural language processing,
speech recognition, machine vision etc.
He further asks, What is Machine Learning? And their types?
Algorithms can learn from observational data, and make predictions
based on it.
1.Unsupervised
2.Supervised
He explains about GAN, generative adversarial networks

He comes to and end about AI by lastly stating that If you want to

implement AI in your Design Process, figure out what exactly you need
assistance with? i.e. is it with finalizing the building massing/ footprint,
or creating floor plans, or facades, or selecting a particular design
options, or analyzing an existing design option, etc.
Then figure out what is the type of data set you need to train your
model. Thirdly figure out what specific model you need to choose?
Fourthly, train any suitable model (with the help of an AI expert ) and
execute your project

VR
Virtual reality is an artificial environment that is created with specific
software and presented to the user in such a way that the user suspends
belief and accepts it as a real environment.
Components of VR
• Virtual World
• Interaction
• Hardware
Software
360-degree videos, also known
as immersive videos or
spherical videos, are video
recordings where a view in
every direction is recorded at
the same time, shot using an
omnidirectional camera or a
collection of cameras.

He ends the seminar by stating the different types of technologies related

to the AI &VR.
And how learning them will benefit us in the future cause these
technologies will be the future
