AS-Interface General Features

AS-Interface is designed as a potential-free and ground-symmetrical system. It offers high

interference immunity even without additional measures, such as shielding in industrial en-
vironments.

It is important to not affect the ground symmetry of the system.

It is possible to use a shielded cable for AS-Interface, but this may have a negative effect on
the total network length.

In principle, it is also possible to transmit ASi signals via round cables, such as standard sensor
cables with M12 or M8 connectors.
As a rule of thumb, all cable lengths, not using the ASi profile cables but round cables, but sensor
or actuator round cables, must be added twice to the actual segment length.

This guideline value can be deviated from in specific cases, provided that a release measure-
ment with the diagnostic software does not detect any warnings or errors.

Observance of the following installation instructions will ensure that ASi communication is as
trouble-free as possible. Non-observance does not automatically lead to a faulty system.
A release measurement taken with the diagnostic software provides reliable information about
the quality of the installation and is always recommended.

For better understanding, please watch out for the following symbols:

This installation offers the highest interference resistance and helps to avoid errors.

This installation may be prone to faults, interferences and errors.

Cable Routing // General Information

` The yellow AS-Interface cable should be used whenever possible.

// Brown conductor for ASi + // Blue conductor for ASi –
` It is necessary to check for correct polarity at all times.
` Avoid unfavorable non-ground symmetrical cable routing over longer distances.

` Even if communication via the AS-Interface cable is insensitive to electromagnetic interferen-

ce, it should still be laid separately from power cables – including inside the control cabinet. If
this cannot be avoided, the greatest possible distance must be ensured.

ASi Network 2
ASi Network 1 ASi Network 2
ASi-5 Crosstalk ASi Network 1
The fault "ASi-5 Crosstalk", which is recognized and
displayed by the diagnostic software, is caused by
the overlapping of ASi-5 signals from different ASi-5
gateways (e.g. by the second ASi-5 master of the
same gateway or the ASi-5 master of another
gateway). The individual segments of the same ASi
circuit (e.g., in a star or line topology) do not cause ASi Network 1 ASi Network 2
"ASi-5 crosstalk" with each other. The most common
causes are either ASi cables laid too close to each
other or a crossconnection between two ASi cables
due to mechanical damage to the cable sheath.

Cable Routing // Summary

Summary of an EMC compliant setup

` EMC protection through protection diodes, varistors, or RC filters are recommended for all
switched inductive loads, such as contactor and relay coils, valves, breakers etc., if this is not
already integrated in the products. Please check the manufacturer’s instructions.
` If frequency inverters are installed, the use of network filters, output filters and shielded motor
cables are recommended.
// Observe installation guidelines in the manufacturer’s instructions.
// Cable shields between filters, frequency inverters, and motors need to be connected directly
to the system ground at both ends, using a sufficient cross section (min. 4 mm2).
` Keep the distance to potential sources of interferences (for example frequency inverters and
their cables) as large as possible.
` If possible, use a line topology with short branch lines.
` The diagnostic software is able to detect interferences caused by EMC emissions.

Power Supply of an ASi Network
ASi communication requires data decoupling for power supply. This can be done either in the
power supply or in the gateway. Modern ASi gateways often have integrated data decoupling
coils. This results in the following advantages:
` Diagnostics of current and voltage can take place in the gateway
` A single 30 V power supply can be used for several ASi networks
` Especially for smaller applications, it is possible to use the 24 V power supply available in the
control cabinet (up to 50 m ASi cable length)
` No special ASi power supply necessary – (24 V or) 30 V DC power supplies can be used
(Bihl+Wiedemann has 30 V DC power supplies with up to 16 A in its range of products)

Requirements for power supplies in ASi networks

` Power supplies must be certified according to PELV (Protective Extra Low Voltage)

| 28
Power Supply of an ASi Network

` The PE-connector on the AS-Interface power supply (protective earth) must be grounded (if
available).
` The FE (Functional Earth or Functional Ground) connection of the ASi network must be
connected to the system ground
` Neither ASi − nor ASi + should be grounded.
` ASi output voltage: 29.5 to 31.6 VDC (>20 VDC, when using a 24 V power supply)

Network Configuration
An AS-Interface segment including all branch lines with ASi bus termination should not exceed
200 m. When extending the network with repeaters, the following must be observed:
` A galvanically separated AS-Interface power supply must be connected in each segment.

Bus Termination

` An additional 100 m of ASi cable (200 m of ASi cable with bus termination) can be connected
after every repeater. However, no more than 2 repeaters can be installed between a module
and the gateway (max. 2 repeaters daisy-chained).
| 30
Network Configuration

` The maximum possible distance between two modules in an AS-Interface network is 1000 m,
if the gateway is positioned accordingly.

Best Practice ASi-Topology
` The optimal topology for ASi is based as far as possible on a line topology.
` Branches/stub lines shorter than 4 m are also ideal, even many stubs < 4 m are no problem
` An ASi-5 bus termination at the end is recommended.
` Branches/stub lines >4 m should be terminated at the end with an ASi-5 bus termination.

ASi-5 Bus Termination
Under certain circumstances, disturbing interferences due to reflections in the ASi-5 network
may impair communication to individual ASi-5 participants. In such a scenario, the ASi-5 bus
termination (BWU4705) ensures stable communication.
` It is generally recommended to use an ASi-5 bus termination. This should be installed at the
end of the longest branch.
` The maximum number of 5 ASi-5 bus terminations per ASi circuit should not be exceeded.
` Combined use of one ASi-3 bus termination and several ASi-5 bus terminations is possible in
the same network without any problems.
` The free choice of topology (e.g. ring, star or line) remains unchanged. Branches can be
created at any point.

ASi-5 Bus Termination

` One ASi-5 bus termination is generally sufficient.

` The diagnostic software is able to detect reflections and in this cases it recommends the
installation of an additional bus termination.
` Install additional bus terminations if recommended by the diagnostic software.
` These should then be installed on the longest unterminated branch in the length range of
4 ... 25 m. If there is no branch in this area, the ASi-5 bus termination should be installed
at the end of the longest branch.
` This can be repeated on further branches until no further interferences are detected by
the diagnostic software.

Sensors or Actuators Supplied out of ASi
` Whenever possible, sensors and actuators should be supplied directly by the respective inputs
or outputs of the ASi module.
` The ASi cables should be kept separate from the power cable and as short as possible.
// Modules should be installed as close as possible to sensors and actuators.
` Ground-free sensors/actuators: Grounding of peripheral devices, galvanically connected with
ASi potential, is not permitted according to specification. It must be avoided to maintain a high
degree of interference immunity.
` If the sensor/actuator has a ground connection that is galvanically isolated from the
ASi network, it must be connected to the system ground.

Sensors or Actuators Supplied out of AUX

` Besides observing the manufacturer's specifications, it is of utmost importance that all the
instructions for installing the cables and regarding the distance to the ASi cable are followed.
| 48
Project Checklist

How many inputs and outputs are needed?

` The number of inputs and outputs and the selection of suitable Asi modules (number of ASi
addresses) determines how many AS-Interface networks are needed.

How much power is required for the peripheral devices?

` The total power demand of the required modules determines the size of the AS-Interface
power supply. Since power supplies cannot be wired in parallel, the size of the installed power
supply must be chosen according to the power consumption. If the AS-Interface network is
segmented using repeaters, the power for each segment is supplied separately and the entire
network can consume considerably more power.

49 |
Project Checklist

` The current consumption of an ASi network can be monitored on the display of the
Bihl+Wiedemann gateway. It is recommended not to exceed 90 % of the power supply's
capacity.

Are special cables needed?

` In general, a combination of profile and round cables is possible. Environmental
influences must be considered when choosing a suitable cable material.

Is the address allocation correct?

` To maintain installation clarity it is suggested to maintain a list that clearly identifies each
module with its assigned address. It is recommended to use the hardware catalog of
ASIMON360 or ASi Control Tools360.
` The Bihl+Wiedemann gateways recognize duplicate ASi addresses as error.

Which modules use which addresses?

` It is imperative to carefully mark those modules or resp. ASi network nodes that already
| 50 received an address.
Project Checklist

When are modules installed?

` During commissioning via ASIMON360 or ASi Control Tools360 Commissioning Wizard, the
user is asked to connect the respective module.

How is configuring performed?

` Commissioning is carried out in the ASIMON360 / ASi Control Tools360 by means of the
Commissioning Wizard.

Are the ASi modules being detected?

` As soon as all connected ASi modules have been recognized by the gateway, it is then possible to
launch protected operation in the gateway and to run the program in the controller.

How can the system be tested?

` Input/output tests are performed as usual in the PLC. This means, the sensors are locally
activated and verified in the PLC.

51 |

www.bihl-wiedemann.de/en/support/downloads/installation-and-commissioning.html to download it)

How to detect errors?

` The diagnostic software quickly detects faults in standard ASi networks and in ASi Safety
networks.
| 52
Tipps and Tricks

What else can be done to achieve a higher interference resistance?

` The connection “Shield” on the ASi power supply must be connected directly and with good HF
characteristics to the machine ground of the system. This does not present grounding for safety
reasons but a functional ground to operate the ASi cable symmetrically against the ground. If a
shielded cable is used, the cable shield must be connected to this point (and only here).
` An appropriate distance should also be maintained to other sources of electrical interference
(speed-controlled drives, welding equipment, etc.). If sensors or actuators are powered out of
ASi via a module, then these connection cables should be limited to a maximum of 2 m.
` Whenever there is a possibility of high electrostatic charge (for instance polishing machines,
die cast machines, or when wrapping/unwrapping plastic foils) it may be necessary to apply
additional protective measures, for instance discharge brushes.

53 |
Tipps and Tricks

Can the ASi cable be routed parallel to power cables?

` Even if the communication via the AS-Interface cable is insensitive to EMC, if possible it
should still be routed separately from power cables – also in a control cabinet.
` If possible some distance should be maintained between ASi cables or sensor cables
supplied from ASi and medium interference sources such as controllers with inductive load or
low RFI power supplies.
` It is recommended to maintain some distance between ASi cables or sensor cables supplied
from ASi and sources of strong interference such as welding robots, switching power supplies
and frequency converters.
` Each AS-Interface network should have its own cable, as far as possible AS-Interface
communication should not be routed with other conductors using a multi-conductor cable
` If single conductors are used (for instance in cabinets), it is recommended to route twisted
conductor pairs. Standard single conductor cables should be twisted if possible.

| 54
Tipps and Tricks

Considerations when using an 8 A or 16 A power supply

If more than 2 A are transferred through the ASi cable, the following limitations need to be
considered when designing the network:
` The voltage drop along the ASi cable increases. Guideline: If 2 A are transferred using
100 m cable with a diameter of 1.5 mm2, the resulting voltage drop is about 5 V.
` The piercing contacts are designed for certain maximum constant amperage rating,
below 8 A. It is very important to refer to the manufacturer’s data sheets.

Considerations when using a standard 24 V power supply

` The applied ASi modules have to be able to work with 24 V as well.
` It is recommended that the voltage at the end of the ASi cable is still at least 20 V.

55 |
| 56
Sign-Off Checklist
` The installation was done according to the installation guidelines of the different manufacturers.
` The segment length is max. 200 m with ASi bus termination. Segment length is the sum of all
"branch lines" in a segment (round cables count double).
ONLY FOR ASi-3
` The connection to the module farthest from the gateway runs through no more than two
repeaters.
` If network extension is accomplished using manufacturer specific products, the manufacturer’s
data sheets and information must be observed.
` The Ground/PE/Shield connection of the ASi power supplies is connected to the system
ground to maintain symmetry.
` The maximum distances to potential sources of interference (e.g. frequency converters) are
maintained.
` The permissible current load of the ASi power supply is smaller than the maximum power
requirement for each segment in the ASi network.
57 |
Sign-Off Checklist

` If available, the 24 V auxiliary voltage must also be considered accordingly.

` Theoretical maximum power requirement: the power requirement can be taken from the data
sheets of the components used.
` The ASi voltage at the end of each segment was measured and corresponds to the modules
connected.
` The current capability of passive distributors was checked (see data sheet).
` Wherever possible use the yellow AS-Interface profile cable, otherwise use a twisted
two-conductor 2×1.5 mm2 cable.
` How was the ASi bus configuration realized?
// Commissioning Wizard in ASIMON360 // ASi Control Tools360 (recommended)
// Addressing tool in the display menu // Webserver
` How are the modules connected to the network documented?
(type, address, and identification data)
// Drawing of the electrical layout // Manually inserted in a table // Printed table based on the
hardware configuration // Table as a printout of the data that was read via the ASi gateway
| 58
Sign-Off Checklist

` How is the network topology documented?

The documentation must show the topology such as: line, star, drop lines, etc.,
and the segmentation with the actually used cable length of ASi network. ASi power
supplies, modules with their corresponding addresses, and repeaters, if used, should be
included.
// Drawing of the electrical layout //Graphically // Not at all
` A release measurement should be taken using the diagnostic software. About 20-30 minutes
should be evaluated at normal operation. During the acceptance measurement, a detailed
test report is automatically generated as a PDF. This ensures that the test result is precisely
documented. You can find more information about diagnostic software in a video at:
www.bihl-wiedemann.de/en/support/videos/asi-diagnostic-software.html
// During acceptance, the ASi quality was documented by means of the diagnostic software.

ASi Gateways
With the ASi gateways from Bihl+Wiedemann you can collect digital and analog data from
decentralized ASi modules and transmit it to the PLC via the respective bus system. In the
same simple way output signals from the PLC are distributed to the actuators on the field via
ASi. Our gateways communicate according to the ASi-3 and ASi-5 standards and therefore
ensure optimal exchange of the data. They are simple and quick to install and commission. The
user benefits from the variety of standard implemented diagnostics functions such as dupli-
cate address detection, earth fault and EMC monitoring as well as an optional PLC functionali-
ty. Double masters in one gateway are an especially cost-efficient approach. This allows two ASi
networks to be controlled by one gateway. The “1 Gateway, 1 power supply for 2 ASi net-
works” version also requires just one power supply for both ASi networks.
