Skills for Life Entry 2 Reading: True/False Questions Teacher’s Notes

Description
In this activity students are introduced to True/False questions and similar question types, such as Yes/No
questions. The activity also shows students how they might approach these types of questions.

Teacher’s Notes

Aims of the lesson • to introduce students to True/False and other similar

question types that are common in the Entry 2 Reading
exam
• to show students how they might approach these types of
questions

Time needed 30 minutes

Materials required • Student’s Worksheet 1 – one copy for each student; project
on to a screen if available
(Text slightly adapted from Part 1 of Entry 2 Reading Past
Paper 2006 (056) available at
www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-qualifications/skills-
for-life/how-to-prepare)
• Student’s Worksheet 2 – one copy for each student; it may
be worth cutting this up into three parts (Questions 1, 2 and
3) to ensure that students focus on one question type at a
time. (Questions slightly adapted from Past Paper, as above)

Procedure
1. Ask the whole class the following questions:
 Do you ever visit museums?
 What kind of museums do you go to?
 What was the last museum you went to?
2. Project Student’s Worksheet 1, if possible. If you can’t do this, hand out a copy to each student. Ask
the following questions:
• Are these texts forms? No
• Are they letters? No
• Are they leaflets? Yes, maybe
© UCLES 2014. For further information see our Terms and Conditions.
Information is correct as of January 2015
• Are they notices? Yes, maybe
• Can you find them in a dictionary? No
• Can you find them in a newspaper? Yes
• Can you find them on a website? Yes
• Can you find them in a guidebook? Yes
3. Remove Student’s Worksheet 1 from the screen OR ask students to cover their copies up if you
have handed it out to them. Write the following on the board:
In the TV Centre you can visit rooms where they make programmes. True or False?
4. Ask students what they think are the most important words in the sentence. Underline key words as
follows:
In the TV Centre you can visit rooms where they make programmes.
5. Show Student’s Worksheet 1 on the screen again OR ask students to look at their paper copy. Ask
students which text they should look at – the text about West TV Centre. Ask students to read the text
to find if the sentence you have underlined is true or false. Check the answer with the whole class,
and ask students to justify their answer. (TRUE – Our tours include going into studios (including
the news and weather)
6. Remove Student’s Worksheet 1 from the screen OR ask students to cover their copy if you have
handed it out to them. Hand out Student’s Worksheet 2. Ask students, in pairs, to read the
statements in Question 1 and to underline/highlight the important words. Monitor students doing this,
then check with the whole class. Accept any reasonable suggestions. (See Key to step 6.)
7. Hand out paper copies of Student’s Worksheet 1 if you haven’t done so already. Ask students to find
the answers for Question 1 and to underline/highlight the words in the text which tell them the
answers. Monitor students doing this, then check with the whole class. (See Key to step 7.)
8. Ask one student to read the rubric for Question 2, then ask students which text they need to look at
for this question. (the Central Museum text)
9. Ask students, in pairs, to read the statements in Question 2 and to underline/highlight the important
words. Monitor students doing this, then check with the whole class. Accept any reasonable
suggestions. (See Key to step 9.)
10. Ask students to find the answers for Question 2 and to underline/highlight the words in the text which
tell them the answers. Monitor students doing this, then check with the whole class. (See Key to step
10.)
11. Ask students to find and write down the telephone numbers of the TV Centre and the museum. Ask
them to read the rubric for Question 3 on the worksheet and elicit what they have to do – find any
information that is incorrect, delete it and write the correct information in the last box in each row.
12. Ask students to look at the first row – Telephone – and decide if either of the two numbers is incorrect
–Yes, the TV Centre number is wrong. Ask them what they should do now – delete the TV Centre
number and write the correct number in the final box in the row.

13. Ask students to do the rest of Question 3. It may help them to do it in pairs. Encourage them to
underline/highlight the words in the text which tell them the answers. Monitor activity and check
answers. (See Key to step 13.)
14. Explain to students that the way people prefer to do reading tasks varies. However, True/False and
similar question types usually do not require students to read every word in the text. The important
thing is to know what information you are looking for and to scan the text quickly for that information.
The following approach may be helpful:
• Read the text quickly for a general idea about the format and main subject matter.
• Read the first statement, underlining or highlighting the important words.
• Look through the text highlighting/underlining words relating to the statement.
• Read the highlighted/underlined words carefully before choosing the answer.
• Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 for subsequent statements.
Remind students that they may not find exactly the same words in the question and the text, but that
they should look for words with the same or similar meanings (paraphrases).

Additional information
At Entry 2, ‘wordspotting’ may sometimes be possible, particularly in reading tasks which require scanning for
specific, concrete information. However, students should be careful not to assume that word matches always
work.
