STAKE HOLDERS

1. Educators,
2. Administrators,
3. Government officials,
4. Business leaders,
5. Health care professionals etc.

Research can be usedto:

1. reduce crime,

Meaning of Research
• Re- Search

• Gathering information needed to answer

a question, and thereby help in solving a
problem.

• Systematic and organized effort to

investigate.

Research is not a option-It is essential for survival and Growth.

Research is composed of two syllables a prefix ‘Re’ and a verb ‘Search’.
• Re means again, and Search means to examine closely and carefully, to test and
try, to probe.
• Research in common refers to a search for knowledge.
• Research is a scientific and systematic search for pertinent information on a
specific topic.
• Research is an art of scientific investigation.

▪ The Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English lays down the meaning
of research as “a careful investigation or inquiry specially through search for new
facts in any branch of knowledge.”
▪ Redman and Mory define research as a “systematized effort to gain new
knowledge.”
▪ Research is a purposeful, precise and systematic search for new knowledge, skills,
attitudes and values, or for the reinterpretation of existing knowledge, skills,
attitude and values.

• According to Clifford Woody research comprises defining and redefining
problems, formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions; collecting, organising
and evaluating data; making deductions and reaching conclusions; and at last
carefully testing the conclusions to determine whether they fit the formulating
hypothesis.
• The search for knowledge through objective and systematic method of finding
solution to a problem is research.
• Research is a organized systematic data based scientific inquiry, or investigation
into a specific problem undertaken with the purpose of finding answers or
solutions to it

Characteristics of research
• 1. Generalized.
• 2. Controlled.
• 3. Rigorous.
• 4. Empirical.
• 5. Systematic
• 6. Reliability.
• 7. Validity.
• 8. Employs hypothesis
• 9. Analytical & Accuracy.

OBJECTIVES OF RESEARCH

DIFFERENT FOR DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANISATIONS

i. To seek insight into a observed phenomena and explain its logic and reasoning
of happening e.g. Declining Profitability
ii. To help the mankind in solving the problems faced from time to time for
making life more comfortable and entertaining e.g. Telecommunication and e
ticketing
iii. To explore the possibility and methodologies of doing things which have not
been done so far but are useful for the mankind

10
Continued…

▪ To continuously improve the effectiveness of present systems and procedure in

any field e.g. compensation, recruitment and retention policies

▪ Test or challenge existing beliefs, notions etc. which have not been empirically
proved so far with flux of time and need to be tested again for relevance in the
changed context e.g. relationship between intelligence and creativity

▪ Explore in to new areas that might have been become relevant.

▪ Analyze the past data of discovering trends ,patterns and relationship

MOTIVATION IN RESEARCH
The main aim is to become an eminent educationist……….that is inspiring
What makes people to undertake research?
This is a question of fundamental importance. The possible motives for doing
research may be either one or more of the following:
1. Desire to get a research degree along with its consequential benefits.
2. Desire to face the challenge in solving the unsolved problems, i.e., concern over
practical problems initiates research.
3. Desire to get intellectual joy of doing some creative work.
4. Desire to be of service to society.

• Desire to get respectability.
• Directives of government,
• Employment conditions.
• Curiosity about new things.

What is the purpose of
doing research?
1. Identifying Problems and
Solutions
✓ Result of Delhi University. More than 70% students
failed?
➢ Undesirable situation.
➢ Why so many?
➢ Try to overcome. How?

✓ Diagnose the factors that contribute to undesirable

situation, attack those factors and improve upon the
situation.
2. Generate Knowledge
We are able toidentify:-
✓ Factors,
✓ Reasons,
✓ Truth which is hidden and which has been not
discover

We can say:-
• Research helps to develop new theories, laws,
principles, methods, techniques etc.
3. Researchoffers pleasure of
solving a puzzle
Importance of Research

✓ Solve any problem of society.

✓ Adding knowledge in existing knowledge.

✓ Implications for policy and project implementation.

✓ Applicable outside of the research
