9 COMMENCEMENT OF WORKS
The installation of the stick curtain wall is in compliance with the approved shop drawings
and requirements of project specifications. A pre commencement approval procedure must be
carried out between the client and ALC.

1. Survey and Layout

1.1 Initial inspection of the areas shall be conducted in coordination with the client’s survey team. The
purpose is to determine the Control Points and Bench Mark points used by the contractor/traverse, by
the client, in locating the grid lines, which is going to be the basis of layout plan for the curtain wall.
1.2 After the joint inspection and familiarization, ALC team can start the layout and marking of offsets
for elevation and gridlines. ALC team of surveyors will use a different colored paint to have
distinction of markings between Client’s point and ALC surveyor’s point.
1.3 Points taken from the inside of the buildings shall be transferred outside the building and shall be
used as a station point for checking the panel layout. During the course of the survey, a joint survey
between the client and ALC survey team shall be carried out to settle survey discrepancy at the
earliest opportunity.
2. Installation of Structural Brackets
2.1 Pre-assemble the steel brackets supports of mullions (i.e. the hooking plates, fixing bolts and serrated
washers). Ensure that the type and size of materials used for the brackets are approved and assembled
as per the approved drawings.
2.2 Ensure proper orientation of the cleats and the fixing bolts, the number and type of washers to use

Each bracket must be set following the correct in and out of the curtain wall panels. A one meter offset
from the gridlines shall be used as a reference to determine the correct in and out of the brackets. Establish
2.7
the grid line as near as possible to the edge of the concrete or set an offset if necessary. Take the
measurement from the grid up to the tip edge of the bracket.

Once the correct in and out distance has been established from one end to another end, install a guide line
2.8 between these points using nylon string and use it as a reference for setting the brackets in between those
two points. Once it has been set, hand tight the bolts and it is now ready for vertical elevation setting.

2.9 Setting for Elevation:

Taking the reference from ground zero, establish the elevation marks and establish an offset
using the structural or finish floor line level as reference of whichever floor the brackets will
2.9.1 be installed. Reflect all elevation marking on to the steel substructure using a yellow marker
or paint. After establishing the elevation marks, position the measuring rod on top of the
bracket.

Obtain the vertical distance from the finish floor line down to the top of the bracket. Add
this distance to the vertical offset which was established earlier. The value obtained shall be
use throughout the survey of the brackets for the respective floor. Using an automatic level,
2.9.2 sight the marking and measure from the reference elevation, get the reading and add or
subtract value taken from the reading. Transfer these points on to the measuring rod and
position it on top of the bracket. Adjust the bracket by tapping it downward or upward until
correct elevation has been attained.

Once the correct elevation has been established, bolts can now be tightened to its required
2.9.3 torque. Once all the bracket has been secured and checked, it is now ready to accept and
install the mullions.

Completed installation of the brackets shall be offered for the Client’s inspection and approval, once the
2.10
QA/QC Inspector confirmed the satisfactory installation of the brackets.

11 WATER PROOFING AND VAPOR BARRIER

Self-adhesive waterproofing membrane shall be used for water and vapor barrier at the perimeter of the
11.1
curtain wall.

11.2 A minimum of 100 mm overlap should be maintained to join the waterproofing membrane.

Prepare the surface of the structure to fix the one side of the membrane. Preparation and application of
11.3
waterproofing membrane shall be in accordance with the recommendation of the manufacturer

Apply appropriate primer to the surface of the structure on which the membrane shall be applied.
11.4
Allow to dry and apply the membrane.

Apply other side of the membrane at the end mullion of curtain wall. Mechanically fix the membrane
using a flat Aluminum bar screwed on the mullion, tacking the membrane between the flat bar and the
11.5
mullion. Apply silicone sealant the joint of the flat bar and the mullion to ensure waterproofing is sealed
against the curtain wall.

Finished Aluminum closure cover shall be installed in front of applied water proofing membrane for
11.6
finishes.

11.7 Apply seal, tool and finish at joint of the closure cover and structure as necessary.

12 SEALING OUT

Filling the rough opening gap: Rough opening gaps shall be insulated following the fenestration
products installation to reduce air leakage and energy loss. The material used to fill the rough
12.1
opening gap shall be selected to enhance the energy saving performance of the fenestration product
installation.
One component polyurethane foam sealant, or other code approved material shall be used to fill
12.2 the rough opening gap as required by applicable codes or the contract documents or the
fenestration products manufacturer.
Most sealant joints require a sealant backing material to assure proper joint shape and sealant
dimensions to prevent “3-sided adhesion”. Joints should be a minimum of 1/4in. (6mm) wide. If
12.3
joints are less than 1/4in. (6mm) wide, the sealant manufacturer shall be consulted for
recommendations.

In general, sealant backing should be installed in butt joints so that the depth of the sealant is no
12.4 more than half the joint width. Sealant depth should not be less than 1/4in. (6mm) or more than
1/2in. (12mm).

In AAMA 850: “In butt joint and perimeter joint, the width and depth to width ratio are both
critical. The width shall be large enough to allow for a sufficient quantity of sealant. As a general
12.5
rule of thumb is 1/4in. (6mm) minimum. Typically, the depth of the joint should no smaller than
half the width, but in no case should the depth be greater than the width.”

“Joint Depth is usually controlled by the installation of back up material. A backer rod is usually
cylindrical and compressible. The diameter is larger than the joint and the rod is compressed when
inserted into the joint. Compression of the backer rod provides the proper configuration for the
12.6
sealant. Caution should be exercise not to puncture the rod during insertion. The sealant should
also not adhere to the backer rod. Three-sided adhesion will result if adhesion exists between the
sealant and backer rod.

Surfaces must be clean, dry and sound for adequate sealant adhesion. Remove dust, dirt and other
loose particles by brushing or wiping. Remove oily substances by wiping with a solvent
dampened cloth. Change cloths to prevent re-deposition and wipe dry with clean cloth before
solvent evaporates from surface. Use caution used when handling any solvent; be sure to
12.7
understand and follow any safety statements on the solvent container. Be sure the solvent is
compatible with, and will not attack, the surfaces. Abrasive cleaning may be required to obtain a
sound, clean surface. Sanding, wire brushing, grinding or cutting can be used to expose a good
surface.

Clean surfaces before applying sealant as listed below:

Painted - Use Isopropyl Alcohol Mill - Use Isopropyl Alcohol Glass - Use Isopropyl Alcohol

Pour solvent onto a clean, soft, absorbent, lint free cloth. Rub the surface to remove surface
contaminants.
12.8
Dry with clean, dry cloth towel.
Prime surfaces when required and allow drying. Mask area if necessary
Use silicone sealants that are structurally approved by manufacturer. Apply sealant to fill area in a
continuous bead without pockets or voids. Force sealants into the void between the frame and the
barrier wall.

12.9 Seal around application, sealant must be tooled.

Job Safety Analysis

Instructions for completing Job Safety Analysis (JSA) form

Section I -Enter general information about the site and job task.
Section II - Determine whether any of these operations apply to the job task to be performed. Make note of any special training, permit, certification, and risk assessment
requirements.
Section III - Identify any human/organizational factors that could impact the ability to perform the work safely.

1. Break the job down into steps - Be as specific as possible. Write each job step in a new row of column A (Activity/Step). It’s a good idea to leave an extra row between
steps in case you need them later. Add additional rows to the table as needed, or if completing the JSA on paper, print additional copies of the sheet to accommodate
all job steps.
2. Determine the hazards associated with each job step and write them in column B (Hazards). Use the examples of hazards provided below to trigger your thinking about
different types of hazards and energy sources.
3. List any control measures that will be taken to ensure that step is done safely in column C (Control Measures). Use the control measure examples and hierarchy provided to
trigger your thinking about different types of controls and their effectiveness at reducing risk. Controls toward the top of the table tend to be more effective at minimizing
the severity and/or likelihood of an event than the controls toward the bottom of the table. If this job involves a Life Crucial Operation, continue to step 4. Otherwise,
repeat steps 2-3 for each of the job steps identified, then proceed to step 8.
4. Considering the hazards involved and the control measures that will be in place, determine the worst credible severity of an incident that could result from this job step.
Use the severity table provided. Write the severity number in column D (Severity).
5. Considering the hazards involved and the control measures that will be in place, determine the likelihood that an incident will result from this job step. Use the likelihood
table provided. Write the likelihood number in column E (Likelihood).
6. Multiply the severity number by the likelihood number and enter the product in column F (Risk).
7. Consider the risk rating against the thresholds provided in the Overall Risk Ratings.
i. Very low and low risk ratings of 1-2. This level is generally considered acceptable provided that all control measures are applied.
ii. Medium risk ratings of 3-9. Medium risk requires a planned approach to control the hazard and applies additional controls if required. Action taken must be
documented on the risk assessment form.
iii. High and Very High-Risk ratings of 10-25. For all high and very high risk, Column G (Additional control measures) must be implemented to further reduce the risk to
a medium or low level. Such activities shall not be proceeded until applying additional control measures. The Construction Director/Manager or facility Manager must
personally review the activities with a High or Very High residual risk score and approve additional control measures by signing off the JSA.
8. Repeat steps 2-7 for each of the job steps identified.

Section IV - Provide the name, company, and title of those who prepared and reviewed/approved this form in the signature box provided. The Construction Director/Manager or
facility Manager must review and approve the additional control measures that have a High or Very High-Risk rating before proceeding the task. Additional space is also provided
for crew members to sign the JSA if desired.
