System Information
EMS
Engine control system
EMS 2 (Engine Management System) is an electronic
system with CAN communication (Controller Area Net-
work) for diesel engine control. The system was devel-
oped by Volvo Penta and includes fuel regulation and
diagnostic functions. The system comprises a control
unit, injectors, a number of sensors that supply the
control unit with values, and connectors for diagnostics
and functional checks. The engine can be connected
to a communication interface comprising a CAN link
and a serial link.
Fuel regulation

Press Enter to reach the main menu.
• Engine Hours
• Engine rpm
• Coolant Temperature (°C)
• Oil Pressure (kPa)
• Urea Level (%)
Remaining level as a percentage of full tank.
• Fuel Rate (l/h)
Current fuel consumption.
• Boost Temperature (°C)
• Boost Pressure (kPa)
• Oil Temperature (°C)
Menus
The DCU has three main menus.
• Engine data shows current engine data.
• Diagnostics shows active fault codes.
• Settings shows display and engine settings.
Press OK to proceed to the submenus and scroll using
the panel arrow keys.
Diagnostics
If a malfunction is detected in the system, the operator
is alerted by means of a pop-up message. Fault codes
are presented as text in the diagnostics menu. Press
OK for more detailed information about causes and
remedies. Information will then be provided about
SPN, FMI and engine hours when the fault became
active.
