System Information, EMS

System Information
EMS
Engine control system
EMS 2 (Engine Management System) is an electronic
system with CAN communication (Controller Area Net-
work) for diesel engine control. The system was devel-
oped by Volvo Penta and includes fuel regulation and
diagnostic functions. The system comprises a control
unit, injectors, a number of sensors that supply the
control unit with values, and connectors for diagnostics
and functional checks. The engine can be connected
to a communication interface comprising a CAN link
and a serial link.

CAN (Controller Area Network)

CAN link J1939 handles all communication with the
EMS 2 engine control unit. The CAN link is designed
for connection to other components that support the
SAE J1939 protocol such as instrument panels and
drive trains.

If a fault occurs in the CAN link the instrument and its

indicator lights are switched off.

If faults occur on the links, the engine will run at

idle. In such cases, the engine can be shut down
by using the auxiliary stop (AUX-STOP).

Display - the panel acts solely as a display instrument

The difference between control units and display units

is that display units do not transmit anything via the
communications buses.

little on the installation.

Versatile Engine

0-100% value where 0% is idle rpm and 100% is
engine speed. This request can only be overridden if a
fault occurs that might damage the engine or if the
request on the CAN occurs via a TSC1 message.

Control System Installation

Connection
General
• The installation must be well prepared for and car-
ried out with the greatest care.
• Secure the connecting cable between the engine
and instrument panel with clamps. Bear in mind that
connector blocks must be mechanically secured so
that they are not exposed to any pulling forces.
• The cables must not be run close by hot engine
components or close to any other heat sources.
Ensure that the cables are protected from mechan-
ical wear, sharp edges and water splashes. If nec-
essary, the cables can be run through conduits.
• As far as possible, avoid splices in the system wir-
ing. The cables and any splices must be accessible
for inspection and service.

NOTICE! Connectors must be assembled “dry”, they

must not be filled with petroleum jelly or similar.

Power supply
Engine: TAD117xVE - 167xVE

NOTICE! The engines are equipped with 2-pole elec-

trical systems. This means that the positive and neg-
ative cables from the battery must be connected to the
starter motor terminals.
The battery positive cable may be run via a main
switch to a positive terminal on the starter motor.
The battering negative cable must be connected
directly to the starter motor negative terminal.
See figure.

Battery charging
Batteries on all engines are supplied with power from
the alternator as standard.

Battery cable cross-sectional area

The total length of the positive and negative cables

The recommendations are made for an engine without

starting aids or external engine load during start at a
temperature of -15°C (5.0°F).

must be adjusted simultaneously with VODIA, accord-
ing to the below.

NOTICE! The EAM122 interface module is not sold by

Connecting of VODIA 5, VOCOM
Function
Connect the VODIA5 tool, part # 88890300 to a com-
puter to read off and adjust parameters.

Connect the VODIA tool to the 6-pin diagnostic outlet

connector located on the left side of the engine.
Refer to the VODIA user instructions for directions.

Diagnostic Function
The diagnostic function monitors the EMS system,
checks that it is functioning normally and has the fol-
lowing tasks:
• The detection and localization of malfunctions.
• Notifying that malfunctions have been detected
• Provision of fault tracing directions

Both active (non-rectified) and passive (rectified) faults
are stored in the control unit. Active faults

A fault message in the form of a fault code is always
generated when a malfunction is detected by the diag-

severity of the fault.
• The engine is not affected.

• Engine torque is limited to different levels.
• The engine is shut down.

Use the display to see which fault code was set; Do as follows to read the fault code:
refer to Reading fault codes via the DCU.
1 Press the SEL button to get to the fault list.
3 Look up the fault code in the Fault Code Regis- The fault list shows:

3 Press Return/Enter to exit the fault list.

NOTICE! To access the fault list when no fault code

is set, press the OK button and select Diagnostics
from the menu.

Erasing fault codes

The diagnosis function fault memory is set to zero
when power to the engine is switched off.
NOTICE! Power must be switched off completely.
When power is switched on again the diagnostic func-
tion will check whether there are any malfunctions in
the system. If this is the case, new fault codes will be
registered.
This means fault codes that have not been rem-
edied:
1 will be designated inactive; the inactive fault
code can then be deleted using the VODIA tool.
2 must be confirmed and read off every time
power is switched on.

If the diagnostics button is depressed after the fault is

remedied and stored and fault codes have been
deleted, the code 1.1, No faults, will be shown.
