CHAPTER 1: ELECTRIC FIELDS

▪ 1.1 Properties of Electric Charges

▪ 1.2 Charging Objects by Induction
▪ 1.3 Coulomb’s Law
▪ 1.4 The Electric Field
▪ 1.5 Electric Field of a Continuous Charge

OBJECTIVES

▪ Describe some basic properties of one manifestation of

the electromagnetic force, the electric force.
▪ Discuss Coulomb’s law.
▪ Introduce the concept of an electric field associated with
a charge distribution and describe its effect on other
charged particles.
▪ How to use Coulomb’s law to calculate the electric field
for a given charge distribution.
▪ Discuss the motion of a charged particle in a uniform
electric field.

1.1 PROPERTIES OF ELECTRIC
CHARGES

Charges of the same

sign repel one
another and charges
with opposite signs
attract one another.

There are two kinds of electric

charges, which were given the
names positive and negative by

Electrical conductors are charged in some small region,
materials in which some of the the charge readily distributes
electrons are free electrons itself over the entire surface of

Charged by rubbing

Electrical insulators are only the area rubbed becomes

1.2 CHARGING OBJECTS BY
INDUCTION
How to charge a conductor by a process
known as induction

Charging an object by induction requires no

contact with the object inducing the charge.

1.3 COULOMB’S LAW

CHARLES COULOMB
French physicist (1736–1806)
Coulomb’s major contributions to
science were in the areas of
electrostatics and magnetism. During
his lifetime, he also investigated the
strengths of materials and determined
the forces that affect objects on
beams, thereby contributing to the field
of structural mechanics. In the field of
ergonomics, his research provided a
fundamental understanding of the
ways in which people and animals can
best do work.
