INTRODUCTION

Mass Communication involves communication with the mass audience and hence the name mass

communication. They transmit messages to the general public through various modes like books,

newspapers, films, magazines, radio, television or the Internet. Mass Communication is

classified into Print Media and Broadcast Media. The Print Media can be classified into

newspaper and magazines and the broadcast Media into television and radio.

Newspaper being one of the oldest form of Mass Communication and the most relay information

bank of almost all the readers. It published on a daily, weekly, fortnightly basis. It is easily

available to everyone around the world for a very cheap price. Magazine on the other hand is

also called as the periodical that is now printed or even published digitally. More than a reading

material it is used as a advertising tool. The readers pays a price for a monthly or a weekly

subscription issue.

There are various types of magazine that interests the readers they are Art Magazines, Cooking

Magazines, Film and Entertainment Magazines, Health and Lifestyle Magazines, Children

Magazines, etc.
When it comes to the Broadcast Media, Radio is one of the most common mode of media that is

available and accepted by a large mass. It is accessible by everyone for those who can read and

who cannot. There are more information, news, music, conversation, entertainment etc..

Television on the other hand is a global entertainment bank that is used mostly by everyone

around the world. We depend on TV for entertainment, news, education, culture, weather, sports

and even music. Television also serves as an advertising tool. Internet is a worldwide medium

that helps to access information to anyone who has computer and broadband.

Though there are various modes of media, News is very common thing that we use media for.

News is the information that provides the mass about the current events. Journalism is the

production and distribution of reports on the events, facts, ideas, and people that are the news of

the day. Journalism changes from countries to countries. News is controlled by government and
is not fully independent. Meanwhile, in few other countries news media is fully independent and

never dependent on the government.

Journalistic ethics are the common values that guide reporters. They lay out both the aspirations

and obligations that journalists, editors, and others working in the field should follow to execute

their work responsibly. There are around several codes of ethics in journalism. Different region

use different codes of ethics. Journalism ethics have evolved over time. Most news organizations

have their own written codes of ethics, as do professional membership bodies. Despite the fact

that there are a variety of codes of ethics, some of the core elements are truth, accuracy, and

honesty.

Journalism’s codes of ethics are intended to ensure reliability of reported information by

defining acceptable practices. The guidelines assist journalists in identifying and dealing with

ethical dilemmas. The codes and ethics can help the journalist to self-monitor and self-correct.

Newspaper is a printed media that is loaded with lots of information of daily happenings. Every

Newspaper has different sections with different types of news accordingly. The segments include

global news, business, local news, well-being, classifications, sports and entertainment. A

Newspaper not only provides information, but also has small segment of refreshments like small

mind games as we see in crosswords, puzzles, sudoku, riddles and a lot more.

Newspaper comes in different languages according to different areas it is being published to.

Every individual will pick and intend to pick a newspaper of their own desire and acquire

knowledge. The Hindu, Times of India, The New Indian Express, Dinamalar, Dina Thanthi,
Hindu Tamil, Maalai Malar, Maalai Murasu, Nellai Maalai Murasu, etc are most commonly

read Newspaper around India specially Tamil Nadu.

The Hindu is an English daily owned by The Hindu Group. The Hindu Group is an Indian

publishing company established at Chennai. It’s first publication began in 1878 and its still going

on as India’s favourite Newspaper. The Hindu is published from 21 locations across 11 states in

India. The Hindu has been a family-owned newspaper since 1905, when it was purchased by S.

Kasturi Ranga Iyengar from the original founders. It is now jointly owned by Iyengar’s

descendants, referred to as the "Kasturi family", who serve as the directors of the holding

company.

The paper was initially printed from Srinidhi Press but later moved to Scottish Press, then to The

Hindu Press, Mylapore. Started as a weekly newspaper, the paper became a tri-weekly in 1883

and an evening daily in 1889. A single copy of the newspaper was priced at four annas. The

offices moved to rented premises at 100 Mount Road on 3 December 1883. The newspaper
started printing at its own press there, named “The National Press”. The building itself became

The Hindu’s in 1892.

The Hindu is an independent editorial stand and it is reliable and has a balanced presentation of

the news have over the years, won for it the serious attention and regard of the people who

matter in India and abroad. The Hindu uses modern facilities for news gathering, page

composition and printing. It is printed in seventeen centres including the Main Editorial at

Chennai where the Corporate Office is based. The printing centres at Coimbatore, Bangalore,

Hyderabad, Madurai, Noida, Visakhapatnam, Trivandrum, Kochi, Vijayawada, Mangalore,

Tiruchirapalli, Kolkata, Hubli, Mohali, Allahabad and Kozhikode are connected with high speed

data lines for news transmission across the country.

The Hindu also publishes e-newspapers daily in the internet. It is exactly the copy of actual

newspapers and it reads aloud giving hands free experience to the readers. It is flexible allowing

us to change layout and font size while reading. We can also bookmark articles and save it offline

to read it later. The Hindu e-newspaper is a live platform that updates throughout the day with

articles, videos, podcasts and photo stories. The Hindu e-newspaper also has detailed edition

In 1965, The Times listed The Hindu as one of the world’s ten best newspapers. Discussing each

of its choices in separate articles, The Times wrote: “The Hindu takes the general seriousness to

lengths of severity published in Madras, it is the only newspaper which in spite of being

published only in a provincial capital is regularly and attentively read in Delhi. It is read not only

as a distant and authoritative voice in national affairs but as an expression of the most liberal and

least provincial southern attitudes. Its Delhi Bureau gives it outstanding political and economic

dispatches and it carries regular and frequent reports from all state capitals, so giving more news

from states, other than its own, than most newspapers in India. The Hindu can claim to be the

most respected paper in India.” The Hindu also have an app “The Hindu “ which gives daily

news in a digitalized version. The newspaper is also active in social media sites like Instagram,

Twitter , Facebook etc.

Layout is now made vibrant, bolder, and smart with more emphasis on the magic of white

spaces. A page aligned to such perfection giving the readers the most enjoyable and organized

reading experience. In printing, the C stands for Cyan, which means blue, the M stands for

Magenta, which means pink, the Y stands for Yellow and the K stands for Black. While printing,

the plates for all four colours are laid out separately on a page and lined up in the same spot. If

these colours are not stacked in the same line, the image will be printed blurry. However, if they

are arranged properly, images come out crisp.

In 1968, the American Newspaper Publishers’ Association awarded The Hindu its World Press

Achievement Award. An extract from the citation reads: “Throughout nearly a century of its

publication The Hindu has exerted wide influence not only in Madras but throughout India.

Conservative in both tone and appearance, it has wide appeal to the English-speaking segment of

the population and wide readership among government officials and business leaders. The Hindu

has provided its readers a broad and balanced news coverage, enterprising reporting and a sober

and thoughtful comment. It has provided its country a model of journalistic excellence. Its

Correspondents stationed in the major capitals of the world furnish The Hindu with world-wide

news coverage. For its championing of reason over emotion, for its dedication to principle even

in the face of criticism and popular disapproval, for its confidence in the future, it has earned the

respect of its community, its country, and the world.”

CHAPTER II
REPORT OF THE TRAINING

The Hindu is a prestigious firm that has won several awards. The Hindu Group has won two

awards at the International News Media Association (INMA) Global Media Awards 2020 and
won two golds and two silvers at WAN IFRA’s South Asian Digital Media Awards. The

awards are presented in recognition of outstanding work done by news publishers in digital

media.

Working for a great company like The Hindu, I realised their success lies in their way of

approaching the article with ethics and unique style. During my 15 day work experience with

the Editorial team I learnt various new skills that help me to write better than the rest of the

people. They taught me the nuances of news writing styles and techniques. I learnt to write

for several columns of newspaper like Coimbatore Today, In Brief. These columns helped me

to crisp down the words and write briefly of what is necessary from a very big messages that

has been sent. When it comes to the main picture that is the news article I learnt The Hindu

way of approaching and sculpting news. They taught me News making skills and its

application.

The Hindu has several department like the Editorial Department, Business Line, Metro Plus,

Sales and Purchase etc. I got selected as an Intern for the Editorial Department. The Editorial

Department is one of the most important department of the organisation. The editorial

department is again divided into sections as the bureau and the news desk. I got the chance to

intern at the news desk. It was running under the Senior Deputy Editor Mr.Prasad K.V. and a

group of 4 assistant editors who were working under him.

It also has a pagination department to check the layout of pages and corrections in page

formations.
On my first day there Mr. Prasad , Senior Deputy Editor briefed me about their work and

show me around the place. I also had a brief talk with Mr.Palaniappan, Chief of Bureau of The

Hindu. Prasad sir introduced me to his team of editors and I was given my first task.My tasks to

edit some small news copies of that day. After editing the copies Prasad sir gave me the

corrections I should make and briefed me about the points I should keep in mind while editing a

news copy.

Everyday I was briefed on various things like on the first day . I was briefed on how to make

something newsworthy and the traditional news pattern Hindu follows. Though I was making a

few mistakes while editing , the team always encouraged me to edit with more confidence and I

was given longer copies to edit . Being the only intern at the news desk they really guide me

through every process and made me really comfortable. The following days I got to at look the

works of the advertising department. Mrs .Haripriya .S , Assistant Editor taught me about the

placement of advertisements in the page formation and the how the news differs according to the

placement of the advertisements.

I improved my skills day by day and the number of copies I edited increased from 4 to 10 . After

that Mrs. Kripa .K . , Assistant Editor, gave me a detailed description about the CUE app that

they use for editing final page formation . It is an app which is used by almost every major

newspaper companies such as Times Of India, New Indian Express and The Hindu. It is an app

which is highly efficient to edit the copies and photographs with ease. It even helps in the page

formation by providing diiferent layouts for advertisements and news .

I was also given the task of forming a news report from the information collected from the spot .

The task assigned to me was to write shorten copies of long news copies.

One of the most interesting work I was given during my internship was that I was given news

from other newspapers like Times of India, Indian Express and told to convert their news into

The Hindu format. It was hard to understand at first but through that process I learnt that every

newspaper had their own format and style which was unique to them .
Although my shift was from 5pm to 8pm , I stayed till 10pm on some days to see the complete

page formation. Still it was not fully completed .

In the absence of Prasad sir, Mr.Ashok.P , Assistant Editor , gave me the copies I need to edit and

later he gave me the corrections .

The Hindu newspaper Coimbatore edition was divided into several sections : the first page is

the national page , the second and the third regional and the fourth the south page , and sports

page followed by the editorial section.

It was an exciting place and a calm and jovial atmosphere to work. It was a small place with

several computer cubicles for the reporters. There was three rooms namely, The Chief’s

Cabin, Photography Room, Sales and Purchase and Metroplus. There was a small kitchen

that severs coffee and tea for the workers whenever they are in need of a drink. The place is

work friendly. The department has a separate corner for all the newspaper which are

documented on a regular basis as a record.

The Chief , Mr. Prasad was a calm person and always interacted with me and was quick to

clarify my doubts . He was keen to test me on current affairs and asked about my views on at

least one relevant issue or news.

The Hindu is a place where they follow the journalist code of ethics properly and work

accordingly. I have noticed everyone who works there are kind to each other and help each

other to improve their position. The Chief was a kind person to explain things to me with

patience and understanding even to an intern. All this facts from my workspace made me

approach my assignments with lots of confident.

Writing for editorial started with the characteristics that is every editorial should have an

introduction, body and conclusion like the normal news story, it always has an objective
explanation of the story or an issue. The

opinions should be delivered in a

professional manner as it is read and will

be either directly or indirectly induce

people to criticise the work. Every time the

story is cooked to be written, it should give

or suggest solutions to the problems that has been criticised and it should have a strong,

impactful conclusion that summarise the writer’s opinions.

When it comes to writing an Editorial, I learnt that I should lead with an objective

explanation of the issue and include the W&H questions as it’s the basic to any newswriting.

Then I should Present my opposition first with facts and quotes to strongly state the objection

but it is not necessarily to be an opposition it can also be something that can be brought to

light. The article can begin with a transition that is by adding a rational points to make the

article more interesting and I was advised to add other original reasons and analogies and

then conclude with some challenging punch.

Apart from the structure they advised to keep the word limit to 500 and not beyond that.

Pictures are also counted as words. To brief the editorial process it should have Introduction,

Argument, Evidence, Counterargument, Refutation and Conclusion. The Editorial can be

classified into Interpretive, Critical, Persuasive, Praising. It should most importantly contain

the journalism ethics of writing.

I had a great learning experience writing an editorial article. It was very difficult to

organise the report into a properly aligned article at the beginning. I used to get a lot of

correction on my style of writing and told to be re-written at least thrice but once I got to

know about the tips and rules to write a proper editorial I started to crack the article

decently.

Since the editorial is supposed to be an opinion and since readers know they are reading

opinion it does not amount to bias. It could be that something is good, bad or indifferent. It

doesn’t intend to deceive the reader. Editorials do not influence a newspaper’s fairness when

covering the news. Editorials are important, but never confuse them with facts.

A news story does not express an opinion. Instead it reports a news event - a big storm

coming, the election campaign for a Mayor or a political scandal. It should be free of bias

and it should give equal voice to both sides of the issue. To be very short it is just

newscasters reporting facts with no given opinions it is to bring issues and information to

light for the readers, things the readers should know. It could be something as simple as the

weather for tomorrow or it could be a scandal brewing at a particular place. The news story is

neutral in tone.

An editorial should always has it credibility and it’s accuracy. Accuracy being one of the

most important code of ethics in Journalism, I learnt that it is very important for my article to

be accurate of the information that I am going to present by writing it. I realised that

accuracy is not simply a matter of getting facts or opinion right, it should be weighed to get

at the truth. Achieving due accuracy in live content can be challenging, as there may be little
opportunity to verify factual claims. Where practicable, and particularly if an issue is

controversial, content makers should take steps to ensure due accuracy.

Credibility is the currency of legitimate news sources. The media makes itself credible by

accurate reporting, paying attention to the details and holding the very highest journalistic

standards for all it reporters and editors. It is also more important that even the media fosters

a culture of transparency, adhering to many of the same standards it expects of the

government it covers. Credible news includes verifiable news source and source will be a

multiple one.

The Hindu does not encourage all the fancy words. They prefer simple but elegant words

that is subtle and doesn’t seem extravagant or make the piece of news flashy. Here I

understood that I made use of the ethics called clarity.

Apart from the benefits it made me think about the future of physical papers in the

budding ear of digital or e-newspapers. According to my opinion and of what that is

currently happening in our country I think that the physical paper is moving toward its

end. Both physical newspaper and digital paper has advantages of its own. Talking about

the advantage, Physical paper is been with the human race for as long as they know it’s

existence.

Physical paper is a part of everyone’s life. If not for the current generation till the

last or the previous, it was / also a part of their daily chores. Physical paper is still the

most popular form of getting updated with current affairs. From day one, newspapers in

India were dedicated to societal cause and fighting for rights and civil liberties of the
citizens. In short, newspapers in India gained esteem during the freedom struggle and

thereafter as well.

Print media has to reach its readership with almost matching speed and authenticity of

news. This competition and adaptation of new technologies has undoubtedly given a big

boost to stability and further growth of the newspapers and all other kinds of print

media. Print media experts and corporate publishers are quite confident about further

growth of newspapers in India. On the other hand, there is a general and apprehensive

view, in the other part of the globe, that the newspaper industry has been badly mauled

by the internet, which has created a dent to physical newspaper publishing and

readership.

On my last day , Mr. Prasad told me about my strengths and weakness, I bid farewell to the entire

office as usual edited some copies and had a cup of coffee and left the office gaining a lot of

experience.
CHAPTER – III
MY EXPERIENCE

The Hindu was one of my dream place to intern all my life. Working there as an intern

it has several benefits before that I want to convey my thoughts on the purpose and

benefits of internship that I learnt and also gained. Internship programme is a benefit for

lifetime type where I was able to apply what I learnt in my class. Just before the

internship I had a subject called “Writing for media” I nearly learnt all the basics of

media and journalism.

The course what I learnt in my third semester helped me to apply my theory knowledge

into practical piece. It helped me to blend my learning with the real world work

environment. This made me understand the theory behind the media easily. My internship

days were the glimpse of how a work life would be then I explored a lot on my career

options and felt what it is to be working for a reputed organisation.

Everyday of my internship programme helped me build my confidence and sculpted

me into a new person. It turned my weakness into strengths and improve my likes and

dislikes. Another great benefit of internship is that I got to build network of my own
and got chance to socialise and work with the senior workers. The Hindu was a big

bonus for my resume, it does make my CV worth reading at and makes it interesting .

The Hindu also gave an offer to be taken in as a reporter after my degree. The

reporters said that it will be easy to get an job as I already worked as an intern. The

final but a great advantage of internship is getting a reference letter or the

recommendation letter which will be an asset to reach the job I always wanted.

Overall my experience at The Hindu was beyond my expectation towards interning. The place

gave me a lot of thing to take with me within fifteen days. Though it was a short time I had a

great time talking and working with the reputed journalists of the country who really have great

stories and adventure made all their lives.
