REVISION – PHYSICS - DAY – 1

1. Define power of a lens. A student focused the Sun rays using an

optical device X on a screen S as shown. From this, it may be
concluded that he device X is a (select the correct option) (2)

A. convex lens of focal length 10cm

B. convex lens of radius of curvature 20cm
C. convex lens of focal length 20cm
D. concave mirror of focal length 20cm

2. Rahil uses a lens of power -2.5 D to correct his far vision and
+1.25D to correct his near vision. Find the power of the lens
required to correct his a) far vision and b) near vision. What would
be the power and nature of the combination if the above two lenses
are placed together(in combination). (2)

3. The lens A produces a magnification of –0.6 whereas lens B

produces magnification of +0.6.
a) What is the nature of lens A and B.
b) If the focal length of lens A is 12 cm and the magnification is
– 0.6, what would be the object distance and image distance? (2)
4. The refractive index of glass and water are 3/2 and 4/3
respectively. Find the refractive index of water with respect to
glass and find the speed of light in glass. (2)

5. If an object of 5 cm height is placed at a distance of 15 cm from

a lens of focal length 10 cm, an inverted image is formed. Find the
type of lens, position and height of the image. (2)

6. A 50 cm tall object is at a very large distance from a diverging

lens. A virtual, erect and diminished image of the object is formed
at a distance of 20 cm from the lens. How much is the focal length
of the lens? Also draw a neat ray diagram to show the image
formation in this case.(2)

7. A pond of depth 20 cm is filled with water of refractive index

4/3. Calculate apparent depth of the tank when viewed normally.(2)

8. The refractive index of glass is 1.5 and that of water is 1.3. If the
speed of light in water is 2.25×108ms−1, what is the speed of light in
glass? (2)

9. Determine the speed of light in diamond if the refractive index of

diamond with respect to vacuum is 2.42. Speed of light in vacuum
is 3×108m/s. (2)

10. A converging lens forms a real and inverted image of an object at

a distance of 100 cm from it. Where an object should be placed in
front of the lens, so that the size of the image is twice the size
of the object? Also, calculate the power of a lens.(2)
11. A student focuses the image of a candle flame on a white screen
using a convex lens. He noted down the position of the candle screen
and the lens as shown below
Position of candle = 12.0 cm
Position of convex lens = 50.0 cm
Position of the screen = 88.0 cm
(i) What is the focal length of the convex lens?
(ii) Where will the image be formed if he shifts the candle towards
the lens at a position of 31.0 cm?
(iii) What will be the nature of the image formed if he further shifts
the candle towards the lens?
(iv) Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the image in case
(iii) as said above. (5)
