Unit 1 flight controls
• An elevon serves the same function as an elevator and an aileron. Elevons are
moveable control surfaces located on the trailing edge of the wings. Working in
unison (both up or both down) they function as elevators. Working differentially
(one up and one down) they function as ailerons.
• It is basically used in tail less configuration.

• The linkage is designed in such a way that when the main
control surface is moved, the tab moves in the opposite
direction. Thus, aerodynamic forces, acting on the tab, assist in
moving the main control surface.

Push pull rod system
Here the sequence of rods link the control surface to the cabin input.
Bell-crank levers are used to change the direction of the rod routings: figure sketches
the push-pull control rod system between the elevator and the cabin control column;
the bell-crank lever is here necessary to alter the direction of the transmission and to
obtain the conventional coupling between stick movement and elevator deflection
(column fwd = down deflection of surface and pitch down control).
Cable and pulley system
In this case pulleys are used to alter the direction of the lines, equipped with idlers
to reduce any slack due to structure elasticity, cable strands relaxation or thermal
expansion. Often the cable-pulley solution is preferred, because is more flexible and
allows reaching more remote areas of the airplane. An example is sketched in
Figure. where the cabin column is linked via a rod to a quadrant, which the cables
are connected to.
