What is your office like?

Some companies, such as Google, Inc., are famous for their employee-friendly office designs.
So, people say, ‘This is a fun place to work’. There’s a game room for the employees to use,
free gym membership, and even a massage therapist for stressed-out staff. If you need some
time to think, there’s a quiet room provided, with a view over the lake. In some branches,
employees can bring their pet dogs into the office, to sit beside them while they work at their
desk.
The open plan design means that all the employees share the same office space. Staff
can communicate easily with each other but still have their own space. Some of the pictures
on the walls belong to the employees. The idea is, if you are going to spend many hours a day
at the office, it should be an exciting and pleasant place to be.
However, others disagree on how important the office design and amenities are to
employees. They say that it is job satisfaction that makes people happy at work, rather than a
funky office environment.

MEMO
From: Dewi Ambarsari
To: All sales teams
Subject: Ideas to increase sales
Date: 2nd of October, 20—
Hi everyone,
This is just a short memo about some ideas I have to improve sales. My first idea is to
increase our advertising budget. At the moment, there are still a lot of people who have
not heard of our company. I suggest we put advertisement in all of the major trade
journals.

Next, I think we should try to talk to our current customers more. Many of them have old
systems. We need to ask them to replace their old machines with new ones. I think any
customer who has a machine more than three years old should be contacted immediately.

Start thinking of ideas now, everyone.

Best regards,
Dewi

4. Practice your Grammar requests and offers

a. Making requests – asking someone to do something for you
These are the three most common ways for making requests:
Could you + Verb 1+ Object
Could you open the door for me, please?
Can you + Verb 1+Object
Can you open the door for me, please?
Would you mind+ Verb ing+ Object
Would you mind opening the door for me, please?

b. Making requests – asking if you can do

something
Here are the four most common ways for making requests
(when you want to do something):
Can I + Verb 1
Can I use your computer, please?
Could I + verb 1
Could I borrow some money from you, please?
Do you mind if I + Verb 1
Do you mind if I turn up the heating?
Would you mind if I turned up the heating?”

46
Speaking tip: Could is more polite that can.
Do you mind if…" is followed by the verb in the present tense, but would you mind
if… is followed by the verb in the past tense.
When you're using these two sentences, don't use please. It's already polite enough!

c. Offering to do something for another person

You can make an offer using a phrase like Can I… ?, Shall I… ?, Would you like me to… ?
For example:
Can I help you?
Shall I open the window for you?
Would you like another coffee?
Would you like me to answer the phone?
I’ll do the photocopying, if you like

Shall, can and will are followed by the verb without to.
Shall is particularly British English and is more formal than can. Would you like… is
followed either by a noun, or by an object pronoun and the verb with to.

d. Responding to offers
These English dialogs show you ways to accept or reject offers made to you.
Can I help you?
Yes please. I’d like to know what time the train leaves.

Can I help you?

No thanks, I’m just looking. (In a shop)

Shall I open the window for you?

Yes please. That would be very kind of you.

Would you like another coffee?

No thanks. Or, No thank you.

Would you like another coffee?

Yes please, that would be lovely. Or, Yes please, I’d love one.

8. Reading
a. Read this following passage, then answer the question!

Earth Day is coming up. Have you been doing your part? If your home’s already as green as can be,
it’s time to make your workplace eco-friendly. There are plenty of simple changes you can make
to create a greener office space. We put together a short list of tips, and also spoke to the folks at
the Earth Day Network, who shared a few ways for how to make any office more environmentally
conscious. Firstly, Recycle. One of the easiest, least demanding ways to go green is to recycle. Set
up a few colorful recycling bins around the office to encourage people to properly dispose of paper,
aluminum, plastic, glass and other items. You should also set up separate bins for items such as
batteries and ink cartridges. Secondly, go easy on the paper. Printers are popular machines in an
office, which also makes them a hub for waste creation. In order to conserve as much paper as
possible, set them up to print out everything two-sided. Not only will it save paper, it’ll also make
people think twice about what they’re sending out. Refrain from printing things that could easily be
read on a computer, tablet or smartphone, such as emails. Thirdly, use green products. If possible,
see what office supplies and electronics can be replaced with eco-friendly products. Check out Energy
Star, the government-backed program (through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) that
specializes in researching energy efficiency.

Answer the following question:

1. How many tips can we do to support the go green campaign?
2. How can you make to create a greener office space?
3. What is the second tip?
4. What is the easiest to go green?
5. What is energy star?

b. Share to your friend what you have done and what you are going to do
support the Go Green Campaign!
To support the Go Green Campaign, I have planted some plants around my house like mango tree, guava
tree and some flowers. For next, I am going to ride my bike to my office because my office is only around
three kilometer from my house. That’s what I can do. What about you?

10. WRITING
Referring to your answers in Activity 9 above, write your opinion and share it to your friend.
You may start with this:

The nearest airport in my town is Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport. It is just about 13 km and
it takes about 25 minutes from my house during the normal traffic. Talking about airlines, I
really recommend you not to take Lion Air. I travel quite a lot between cities in Indonesia or to
