DEPARTMENT OF MARINE ENGINEERING
FIRE FIGHTING LAB SEMESTER:8

(A) FIREMAN’S OUTFIT

AIM:
To study about the use of fireman’s outfit.

DESCRIPTION:
 In order to extinguish fire it is important to approach the seat of the fire, so adequate
protection is required from heat and smoke.
 The suit can withstand up to 1000 degree heat.
 For this reason fire man outfit is used onboard ship to fight emergency fire. There are
certain rules and regulations to be followed while carrying fire man outfit on ships.
 The fire man outfit is stored in fire control room and in places that are easily
accessible during emergencies.
 The fire man outfit is mandatory on every ship. The outfit contains of following
things:
1. Self-contained positive pressure air breathing apparatus (SCBA).
2. Water resisting clothing, Fire rubber boots, Hand gloves.
3. Rigid helmet with visor and neck protector.
4. A belt for carrying auxiliary equipment.
5. Intrinsically safe hand lamp (explosion proof light) 3 hours duration.
6. Fire axe and
7. Fire proof life line.
 Fire proof safety life line - code of signals:
# From wearer to attendant: 2 pulls – slack of life line.
3 pulls – help me out immediately.
# From attendant to wearer: 3 pulls – come out immediately.

GENERAL REQUIREMENT (SOLAS):

 As per SOLAS, minimum number of fireman’s outfit required on ships are as follows:

1. For ships between 500 - 2500 tons minimum two sets are required.
2. For ships between 2500-4000 tins minimum three sets are required.
3. For ships 4000 tons and above minimum four sets are required.

RESULT:

Thus we studied about the Use of fireman’s outfit.

NEIL ROBERTSON STRETCHER:

(B) NEIL ROBERTSON STRETCHER
AIM:

To study about the use of Neil Robertson stretcher.

THEORY:
If an accident occurs on a ship, the life of the person greatly depends on the time taken to
remove the person from the site of accident and transfer him to the ship’s hospital room,
where the first aid and other medical procedures can be carried out. There are several medical
equipment available on board and the Neil Robertson stretcher is the most commonly used
one on board ships.

DESCRIPTION

 The Neil Robertson stretcher is designed for removing an injured person from spaces
wherein access, doors, or hatches are too small to permit the use of regular stretchers.
 Spaces such as engine-room spaces, Cargo holds, Pump rooms, Boiler room etc. are
few examples of such compact spaces on ship.
 The Neil Robertson stretcher is made of flexible semi rigid canvas and can be folded
easily when not in use.
 The stretcher is provided with strong straps which when firmly wrapped around
thevictim, give strong support to hold the person with almost negligible movement
with respect to stretcher, which is very important when rescuing or transferring injured
person.
 The stretcher straps are made, such that when tied up over the victim, it covers the
person in mummy-fashion, giving sufficient support

ADVANTAGES
 The victim is tied up firmly with the stretcher, avoiding unwanted fall.
 Can be removed vertically from confined spaces like hatches etc.,as victim is secured.
 When a life line is tied to the stretcher, unwanted swaying can be avoided.
 Easy to use and bring to the accident site.
 Light weight and ready to use

RESULT:
Thus we studied about the Use Neil Robertson stretcher.
