Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), under the strategic direction of the Ministry of Coal(MoC), has
commenced India’s first-ever pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) at the Kasta coal
block in Jamtara District, Jharkhand.
• This pilot project aims to establish new standards in coal resource utilisation, contributing to

• These gases can be used to produce synthetic natural gas, chemical feedstocks for fuels, fertilisers,
explosives, and other industrial applications.
Points to note:
i.In line with the comprehensive policy framework for UCG in coal and lignite-bearing areas, Kasta coal
block was chosen for the implementation of the UCG technology customised for Indian geo-mining
conditions.
• The framework was approved by the MoC in December 2015.
