Northern Route

(MRT Line 5)

The Northern Route (Bengali: নর্দার্ন রুট) is one of t he branches of t he approved MRT Line 5 of
Dhaka Met ro Rail; t he ot her one being t he Sout hern Rout e. The const ruct ion of t he Nort hern
Rout e st art ed in 4 November 2023 and is scheduled t o commence operat ion by 2028.[2]

History

Development
In 2005, t he World Bank published a st udy report , recommending t hat t he government of
Bangladesh build a mass t ransit syst em in Dhaka. In t he same year, American consult ancy firm
Louis Berger Group prepared a st rat egic t ransport plan for Dhaka.[3] The World Bank helped t o
develop t his plan, which proposed t he const ruct ion of five MRT lines in Dhaka.[4] The five met ro
lines were MRT Line 1, MRT Line 2, MRT Line 4, MRT Line 5 and MRT Line 6.[5] On 7 August 2018,
t he government sought expression of int erest for t he nort hern rout e project .[6] On 15 December
2019, t he project was approved by t he Execut ive Commit t ee of t he Nat ional Economic Council
(ECNEC). At t hat t ime, t he pot ent ial const ruct ion cost of t he Nort hern Rout e was est imat ed at
around ৳41238.54 crore (equivalent t o
৳500 billion or US$4.6 billion in 2022).[7] This
has been considered as a fast t rack project by Mass Rapid Transit
t he government .[8] In June 2020, Nippon Koei
Company Limit ed was commissioned t o design Line 5
t he rout e. However, as t he proposed
alignment of t he rout e would pass over t he Northern Route
Dhaka–Aricha highway, t he Roads and
Highways Depart ment (RHD) object ed t o it s
const ruct ion and halt ed t he pre-const ruct ion

act ivit ies. A meet ing was held bet ween t he
t wo sides on 23 March 2021 t o resolve t he Status Under
issue. In t he meet ing, t he RHD proposed t o
t he met ro aut horit y t o change t he alignment construction
and shift it t o t he sout h. But it became
impossible due t o t he acquired land for depot
at Hemayet pur and t echnical reasons.[9] On 28 Owner Road
June 2022, a loan agreement of 71% of t he
t ot al budget was signed bet ween Bangladesh Transport
and Japan Int ernat ional Cooperat ion Agency
(JICA) t o finance t he project .[10] On 3 Oct ober and
2022, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limit ed
(DMTCL) got t he ownership of t he land Highways
acquired by t he depot . On 17 April 2023,
DMTCL st at ed t hat it int ends t o st art it s Division
const ruct ion in July of t he same year
depending on t he decision of t he Board of
Direct ors meet ing scheduled t he next day.[11]

aut horit y for t he const ruct ion of t he depot .[12]
Bangladesh
Anot her meet ing was held t hat day bet ween
RHD and DMTCL where RHD once again
request ed t o change t he locat ion of t wo
st at ions of t he line which were t o be
const ruct ed in Savar Upazila. According t o
RHD, const ruct ion of t he line on t he median of Termini Hemayetpur
t he highway will cause t raffic jams on t he
highway. Also, const ruct ion of t he line on t he (West)
highway may make it an accident -prone
highway. However, t he Addit ional Chief Bhatara
Engineer of RHD said t hat considering t he
import ance of t he met ro project , t he (East)
government will revise t he alignment of t he
expressway. Besides, according t o t he project
direct or of t he Nort hern Rout e, t here will be

no problem if t he widt h of t he highway is
increased on t he ot her side while closing one Colour Sky
side of t he highway while const ruct ing t he
line.[13] In t he same mont h, Sout h Korea signed
on map Blue
a framework arrangement t o provide $1.5
billion in financing for t he rout e.[14] On 20

August 2023, Obaidul Quader, minist er of Road
Transport and Bridges, announced t hat t he
inaugurat ion ceremony of t he line's Service

2023.[15] But lat er on 10 Sept ember 2023, t he
project official not ified t hat it would not be

inaugurat ed on 4 November 2023 by Hasina, System Dhaka
t he same day as t he opening of MRT Line 6's
