INTRODUCTION
This design note aims to provide calculations for the Cembrit to Paroc connection detail top-hat bracket. It should be read in
conjunction with the following documents:
The worst-case wind cpe value for the wall was found to be 1.2 for suction and 0.700 for pressure.
Wind loads for the walls (applied for fixed point) will be:
W = cpe x qp
For suction: W1 [-ve] = 1.06kN/m2
For pressure: W2 [+ve] = 0.62kN/m2
The worst-case wind cpe value for the parapets was found to be 2.1 for suction and pressure.
Wind loads for the parapet (applied for flexible point) will be:
W = cpe x qp
For suction: W1 [-ve] = 1.86kN/m2
For pressure: W2 [+ve] = 1.86kN/m2
The 8mm Cembrit panel's dead load and the Nvelope system are assumed to be 31.8kg/m2 or 0.312kN/m2.
Current calculations are performed for the Paroc to Cembrit connection using Nvelope brackets only.
The outline of brackets, sizes, and thicknesses of the elements are shown in the drawing below.

•Fixing item 7 ‘SFS SL2-S-D12-S14-5.5x25mm @300mm c/c specified in drg. 500001 Vs 2No. SX5 (at
flexible point) or 3No. SX5 @ 480mm horizontal / 912mm vertical centres of Nvelope brackets.
•Fixing item 9 ‘SFS SL3/2-5-S-SV16-6 x 27mm @ 150mm in pair c/c specified in drg. 500001 Vs Pair of
SL2-5.5 at flexible point @ 150mm c/c and pair of SLG2-6.5 @120mm for fixed point fixings
•This needs to be reviewed to ensure the detail drawing in line with the calculation specification.
Is this typical connection detail for the whole building ? if not, how about the other connections between cembrit
and Paroc Panel as shown in detail drawings, for example cantilever fixings over CW jamb or vertical rails back to
back fixed onto external skin of Paroc Panel.

2. C-CHANNELS CHECK
A non-linear FEA analysis was using the bilinear material model for aluminium shown below. The design was limited to be
within the 5251-H22 plastic yield stress limit fu=120 MPa.
The material properties used in the model are shown in the figure below.
2.1 STRESS
Although there is a slight upward slope to the stress-strain curve for the material after the elastic yield point, in reality, the
governing criteria after this are always limited to the strain limit, therefore no stress evaluation against the Von-Misses
failure criterion is necessary
2.2 STRAIN
Since we are using non-linear material properties, we need to check the maximum strain for aluminium is within the
requirements. According to BS EN 1999-1-5. Section 6.1.4 For design purposes, an ultimate plastic strain value equal to
10((fo/E) can be assumed.
For aluminium 5251-H22 it is: elimit=10*(120/70000) =0.017 or 1.7%
Document Ref: 59319-MAC-XX-CA-S-DN03_P03
As shown above, the equivalent total strain for the flexible point is 1.65‰ or 0.17% which is below the allowable 1.7% strain
limit, hence OK.
As shown above, the equivalent total strain for the fixed point is 1.67‰ or 0.17% which is below the allowable 1.7% strain
limit, hence OK.

2.3 DEFLECTION
120mm
The allowable deflection limit may be taken as span/200 = 120mm /200 = 0.60mm, which is greater than 0.496mm, hence
OK.
The allowable deflection limit may be taken as span/200 = 260mm /200 = 1.3mm, which is greater than 0.314mm, hence
OK.

2.4 BUCKLING
A review of the buckling capacity was also undertaken. The results of which are presented below:
As can be seen from the above figure, the lowest [+ve] critical coefficient is 73.0 for the flexible point and 94.9 for the fixed
point meaning the applied load combination can be multiplied by 73.0 and 94.9 times before reaching critical buckling load,
hence OK.

3. FIXINGS CALCULATION
1) FLEXIBLE POINT
2no SL2-S-S14-5.5xL at 150cc, 3mm thick 5251-H22 al. c-channel to 0.6mm (0.55mm steel) Paroc outer skin (grade of
S280GD)
Calculations below are performed per each Nvelope bracket connection, the layout of the brackets is shown on the drawing
below.
Loads applied
Dead Load (DL) = 0.312 kN/m2 (not applicable to the flexible point)
Wind Load (WL) = 1.86 kN/m2
Tension and Shear Capacity of SL2-S-S14-5.5xL (AP-FS-12 according to Paroc) in 0.55mm steel panel outer skin
according to Paroc tested data tables:
Nd = 0.45 kN
Vd = 0.7 kN
2no SX5-S16-6.3 at 480cc, Nvelope bracket to 3mm thick 5251-H22 al. channel.
Loads applied per bracket were calculated above.
Pull-out capacity of SX5-S16-6.3 to 3mm alum. bracket was calculated using EN 1999-1-4:2007 table 8.3
2) FIXED POINT
2no SLG/2-5-S-6.5 at 120cc, 4mm thick 5251-H22 al. top-hat to 0.55mm Paroc outer skin (assumed grade of S280GD)
Calculations below are performed per each Nvelope bracket connection.
Loads applied:
Dead Load (DL) = 0.312 kN/m2 (A dead load of the whole Cembrit section applied to the fixed point)
Wind Load (WL) = 1.06 kN/m2
Worst-case tension per Nvelope bracket:
Nbr = yQ,1 x Load x Area
Nbr = (1.5 x 1.06 kN/m2) x (0.914m x 0.480m) = 0.70 kN
Document Ref: 59319-MAC-XX-CA-S-DN03_P03
Taking into account that the panel will have multiple spans, intermediate supports need to be multiplied with the coefficient
of 1.25 so we get:
Nmax.br = 1.25 x 0.7 kN = 0.88 kN
Taking into account that the panel will have multiple spans, intermediate supports need to be multiplied with a coefficient of
1.25 so we get:
Vmax, br = 1.25 x 0.63 kN = 0.78kN
Tension and Shear Capacity of SLG/2-5-S-6.5 (AP-FS-34 according to Paroc) in 0.55mm steel panel outer skin according
to Paroc tested data tables:
Nd = 0.6 kN
Vd = 0.7 kN
3no SX5-S16-6.3 at 480cc, Nvelope bracket to 4mm thick 5251- H22 alum. channel.
Loads applied per bracket were calculated above.
Document Ref: 59319-MAC-XX-CA-S-DN03_P03
Tension and Shear Capacity of SX5-S16-6.3 to 4mm aluminium bracket was calculated using EN 1999-1-4:2007 table 8.3
For the Nvelope bracket assume aluminium of min thickness of 2.8mm of min. grade of 6005 T6. The exact thickness and
pull-through resistance should be checked by Nvelope.
Bearing resistance:
Conservatively assume tsup/t=1
Fb,Rd = 2.5 x fu x( d x t 3)0.5/ ym2
Fb,Rd = 2.5 x 190* x (6.3 x 43)0.5 / 1.25 = 7630N or 7.63kN
But Fb,Rd 1.5 x fu x d x t / ym2
Fb,Rd 2.5 x 190 x 6.3 x 4/ 1.25 = 9576N or 9.58kN
So Fb,Rd = 7.63kN
* fu =190N/mm2 for 5251-H22
CONCLUSION
The analysis showed that the design was within design limits for strain, deflection, and fixing capacities for the given loads.
