INTRODUCTION
This design note aims to provide a calculation for the parapet capping sheet, capping support bracket, and associated
fixings. It is recommended to read this report in conjunction with the following documents:

 59319-MAC-XX-CA-S-DN02_P01 Where is this document?

 59291-MAC-XX-SK-S-0007_P01
 TAPCON_ xtrem LT HFL min. anchorage 8x70/25-5

The capping and the bracket will be analysed using RFEM analysis software, using non-linear finite element analysis and
the relevant Eurocodes.
The fixing loads will be calculated using a Robot stick model and iExpert Spit software to account for eccentrically applied
loadings and checked in accordance with relevant Eurocodes and associated National Annexes and manufacturers
published data.

1 MODEL PARAMETERS AND SET-UP

The site dynamic pressure qp was determined in the wind load calculations using METSPEC14 software and shown to be
qp= 0.886 kN/m2 (59319-MAC-XX-CA-S-DN02)

The worst-case wind Cpe value for the parapets was found to be 2.1. The highest wind load on the parapets will be:
W = cpe x qp
W = 2.1 x 0.886kN/m2 = 1.86 kN/m2

The dead load of the MAC aluminum capping will be 0.065kN/m2

The worst case capping size was found to be 821mm.

The outline of the parapet, capping and fixings can be seen in the diagram below:

The fixings reactions were calculated using a stick model in ROBOT to account for eccentricity.

DL1 = 0.065kN/m2 x 0.6m = 0.039 kN/m

W1 = 1.86 kN/m2 x 0.6m = 1.12 kN/m
W2 = 1.86 kN/m2 x 0.6m = 1.12 kN/m

3 TOP HAT BRACKET CHECK

For non-linear finite element analysis a bilinear material model of DX51D steel was used. According to the
recommendations given EN 1993-1-5:2006, clause C.6 2(b), we assumed an elastoplastic material model with a nominal
plateau slope.
The material properties used in the model are shown in the figure below.

Figure 6 – Bilinear material model parameters

The following load combinations were created:

3.1 STRESS
Althougth there is a slight upward slope to the stress-strain curve for the material after the elastic yield point, in reality the
governing criteria after this are always limited to the strain limit, therefore no stress evaluation against the Von-Misses
failure criterion is necessary.

3.2 STRAIN
Since we are using non-linear material properties, we need to check the maximum strain is within the requirements of BS
EN 1993-1-5:2006, Clause C.8(1) recommended maximum strain for non-linear FE analysis is 5%

3.3 DEFLECTION
The worst-case deflection at the serviceability limit state is given below:

540mm

Figure 10 - Worst case deflection (RFEM)

The allowable deflection limit may be taken as span/200 (span/100 for cantilervers) = 540/100 = 5.4mm which is greater
than 3.05mm, hence OK.

3.4 BUCKLING CHECK

A review of the buckling capacity of the bracket was also undertaken. The results of which are presented below:

Figure 11 - Critical load factors

As can be seen from the above figure, the lowest [+ve] critical coefficient is 6.66 meaning that the applied can can be
multiplied by 7.057 times before reaching the critical buckling load, hence OK

4 CAPPING SHEET CHECK

used in the model are shown in the figure below.

4.1 STRESS
Althougth there is a slight upward slope to the stress-strain curve for the material after the elastic yield point, in reality the
governing criteria after this are always limited to the strain limit, therefore no stress evaluation against the Von-misses
failure criterion is necessary.

4.2 STRAIN
Since we are using non-linear material properties, we need to check what the maximum strain is within the requirements.
According to BS EN 1999-1-5 Section 6.1.4 For design purposes, an ultimate plastic strain value equal to 10(fo/E) can be
assumed.
For aluminium 1050-H14:
X elimit = 10 x (105/70000) = 0.015 or 1.5%

As shown above, the equivalent total strain is 1.30 ‰ or 0.13% which is below the allowable 1.5% strain limit, hence OK.

4.3 DEFLECTION
The worst case deflection at the serviceability state is given below:

Figure 16 – Worst-case deflection

The allowable deflection limit may be taken as span/90 = 600mm / 90 = 6.6mm which is greater than 4.79 mm, hence OK.

5 VHB TAPE AT CONTACT FACES

To assist the design, VHB tape is used inbetween the coping and the bracket faces. The tape provides a way for the uplift
loads to be transferred between the coping panel and bracket.

The strength of 3M’s VHB tape from the 4910 range is 690kN/m2 for tension and 480kN/m2 for shear, under dynamic loads
(See 3M’s data sheet). The tapes are typically dispensed in 25mm wide rolls.

Hence the maximum allowable dynamic resistance per bracket will be:

Tension: Force x Area = 690kN/m2 x (0.025m x 0.821m) = 14.16kN

Shear: Force x Area = 480kN/m2 x (0.025m x 0.821m) = 9.85kN

Hence the maximum allowable dynamic resistance per bracket will be:

Tension (Factored): 1.5 x 1.86kN/m2 x 0.821m x 0.6m = 1.37kN < 14.16kN, Hence OK
Shear (Factored): 1.5 x 1.86kN/m2 x 0.1m x 0.6m = 0.17kN < 9.85kN, Hence OK

- The anchoring plate is assumed to be sufficient to resist deformation imposed by the load actions.
- Connection between profile and base plate has not been checked
- The calculation is done acc. to expert judgement, based on EN 1992-4

- SPIT can only be held responsible if the calculation examples exactly reflect the application and if the installation is carried out
according to the instruction given in the SPIT specifications. The calculation is correct for SPIT anchors only. The
contractor or specifier should make sure that the base material is able to support the loads especially in the case of a group of
anchors. SPIT cannot be held responsible if this software package is modified without its written approval.
