Essay 1: The ownership of cars should be restricted to one per family in order to reduce traffic

congestion and pollution. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

As a direct result of higher salaries and better living conditions, more and more people are able to afford
cars. However, due to environmental degradation and traffic jam, it is suggested that one family can
only be limited to one vehicle. From my point of view, I fully agree with this statement because it would
relieve gridlocks and alleviate human impacts on nature.

First and foremost, reducing the number of cars owned will improve traffic flow. To start with, the
infrastructure in cities inhibit traffic. Roads in urban areas are often tight and narrow to make space for
housing, while cars are wide compared to vehicles like motorbikes. Thus when too many cars hit the
roads, traffic jams occur. Furthermore, the less cars on the road, the more leeway for other vehicles.
Consequently, motorbikes and public transports can move more freely to avoid clumping together,
which translates to less congestion. If there are less cars, drivers would be pleased to know they will not
fall victim to heavy traffic again.

Secondly, having fewer cars can lessen damage to the environment. The average automobile consumes
fossil fuel and discharges toxic fumes. This means that the use of cars promotes the extraction of
unsustainable resources and furthermore, produces gasses that contribute to the greenhouse effect.
Therefore, limiting car ownership can delay environmental deterioration. Instead of commuting by cars,
people can opt for more environmental friendly solutions, such as riding bicycles to work or taking
public transports to arrive at destinations. These alternatives are not only convenient but economical, as
there is no need to waste money on fuel. Indeed, lowering the number of cars can have many merits.

In conclusion, inhibition of cars purchased per family can effectively address problems relating to traffic
overload and environmental degeneration. Though my meticulous analysis, it is my firm conviction that
there should be a restriction to car purchasing.
