PHYSICAL SCIENCES FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT – IV
LAB ACTIVITY

Aim : To show that when we heat high quality coal. (Carbon content
is more) a gas evolves which can burn.
Apparatus / materials
required : Two boiling tubes, Rubber corks, iron stands, delivery tube, jet
tube, Bunsen burner.
Precautions : 1) Arrange the glass apparatus with care.
2) Take care, one end of delivery tube lie just above the coal to
allow the gas evolved.
3) The other end of the delivery tube must be kept in water or
soap solution.
4) One end of jet tube is free in air and other end is just above
the water level in the tube.
5) Wear a mask and keep away from the flame.
Procedure : 1) Take two boiling tubes and fix them to two retort stands.
2) Take a spoon of powdered coal into a hard boiling tube.
3) Close the test tube with a rubber cork and connect it to an-
other boiling tube with the help of U shaped delivery tube.
4) The other boiling tube is partially filled with water.
5) Arrange a jet tube to the cork of second boiling tube.
6) Now heat the boiling tube containing coal strongly with the
help of Bunsen burner.
7) We noticed that brownish black vapours evolved in the first
boiling tube.
8) These vapours are passed through water in the second boil-
ing tube.
9) Colourless gas bubbles evolve from the water.
10) This gas let out from the tube through a jet tube.
11) When we burn that gas, a bright flame is observed at the
nozzle.
Reporting : We observe a colourless gas evolved through jet tube and if burns
it burns with a bright flame.
Result Analysis : In this experiment the gas evolved burns with bright flame when
it catch fire, indicates that high quality coal (which contains

more carbon) on heating produces a flammable gas.
Generalisation : When high quality coal (carbon content is more) is heated a gas
evolves which can burns.

PROJECT WORK
Name of the student :

Class :

Topic :

Date of Submission :
Name of the project : Earthquake and Tsunami and frequently effected countries.
Objectives : In this project we can know about the natural disasters like
Tsunami and also the earthquake. And also what is tsunami
and earthquake also.
Tools : Pictures and Information gathered from books ad magziues
Procedure :
Earthquake : An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or trembler) is
the shaking of the surface of the earth, resulting from the sudden
release of energy in the earth’s lithosphere that creates seismic
waves. Earthquakes con range in size from those that so weak
that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to toss people
around and destroy the whole cities. The seismicity or seismic
activity of an area is the frequency, type and size of earth quakes
experienced over a period of time. The wordtremor is also used
for non-earthquake seismic rumbling. At the Earth’s surface,
earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and displacing or
disrupting the ground some mythyical/ folk stories told the earth
is balanced on the horn of a and when shifts it to the other
horn, an earth quake takes place earth quakes occur all the
time, all over the earth, they are not even noticed. Major cause
immeuse damage to building bridges, dams and people there
can be great loss to life and property. The earth quakes can
cause floods land slides and tsunamis. The earth quake intensity
measured by seismograph.
Earthquakes effected
Areas in the world : 1. Mid-Atlantic ridge
2. The alpide belt
3. The circum-pacific seismic belt or ring of fire
Tsunami : A tsunami (from Japanese “harbour Wave”) ortidal wave, also
knows as a seismic sea wave, is a series of waves in a water body

caused by the displacement of large volume of water generally
in an ocean or a large lake. Tsunami arise from the sudden
displacement of gigantic water masses due to earthquakes on
the sea bed, volcanic eruption above and under water, land slides
or meteorite impacts. About 8% of all tsunamis result from so-
called seaquakes. The effects of a tsunami on a coast line can
range from unnoticeable to devasting the configuration of the
bathymetry along the coast that tsummi approaching.
Conclusion : Earthquakes and tsunami are both very dangerous natural
disasters. It cause life and property damage so we must very
careful at that after the disaster we have to help the people who
are in need.
Resources : We have collected the information from different magzines,
books and gathered pictures from internet.
Thanks giving : I am very thankful to my parent teachers for doing so well this
project, those who supported very well I appreciate all those
who contributed for the successful completion of project.
