From Me to You…
In today's Gospel reading from Mark 2:23-3:6, we encounter two
significant episodes where Jesus challenges the rigid interpretation of
the Sabbath by the Pharisees. First, as Jesus and His disciples walk
through the grainfields, the disciples begin to pluck heads of grain.
When the Pharisees question this act, Jesus responds by reminding
them of how David ate the consecrated bread when he was hungry.
Then, in the synagogue, Jesus heals a man with a withered hand on
the Sabbath, further provoking the Pharisees.

Jesus' words, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the
Sabbath," are central to understanding these passages. He
underscores that the Sabbath, and indeed all of God's laws, are
meant to serve humanity, to promote well-being and
compassion, not to impose burdens.

Pope Francis speaks on this: "The Son of God offers His mercy and
forgiveness to all, without excluding anyone. He came to tell us that
the Lord loves us and that we are all called to love one another as He
has loved us" (Homily, March 15, 2015). Jesus' actions and teachings
remind us that love and mercy must guide our observance of the law.

In both instances in the Gospel, Jesus prioritizes human need and

compassion over strict legalism. By healing on the Sabbath, He
demonstrates that acts of mercy and kindness are the highest
fulfilment of God's law. The Pharisees, on the other hand, are
portrayed as more concerned with adherence to the letter of the law
than with the spirit of love and mercy that underpins it.

This Gospel invites us to reflect on our own lives and how we observe
God's commandments.

• Are we sometimes more focused on rules than

WWJD?
on the people they are meant to serve?

• Do we sometimes overlook opportunities for

compassion and kindness because we are too
concerned with regulations?
As followers of Christ, we are called to embody His love
and mercy in all we do. Let us remember that true
obedience to God is shown through acts of love,
compassion, and mercy. May we allow the Holy Spirit to
guide us in living out these values, transforming our
hearts to be more like Christ's.
In this way, we honour the true spirit of the Sabbath and all of God's
commandments, living as His faithful and loving disciples.

Fr. David

RESPONDING TO EVIL
Yes, there is evil in the world, and it raises its ugly head in the most
unusual places, in the place where we worship, where we work,
study, got to school, on the street where we live and in the sports
arena. At times, evil seems overwhelming. We feel powerless
before it.

There is no common sense way to resist evil. It doesn’t respond to

logic. At times it is overwhelming.

Jesus is saying, by word and example, there is no complete answer

to the evil in the world, but there is a way to act … or to react.
With courage we can confront evil and make a difference in the
circumstances in which we find ourselves. The response to evil is
always reverence and respect; in a word, it is always love. What
we do, counts!

If God is love, love does not delight in evil. Love always trusts; love
always hopes. And love always perseveres. The genius of
Christianity is that the glory of God is the human being fully alive.
God asks for nothing less than that.

There is never a moment when Jesus lets you out of His sight.
There is never a moment when He is not speaking to you. There is
never a place where He is not present. God rejoices in our well-
being.
