Q1. What is an environment?

Ans. Environment refers to everything in our immediate surroundings that includes all the living and non-
living things around us. It is the place, people, things and nature that surround any living organism.

Q2 How do human beings modify natural environment?

Ans. With the growing population the needs of the human beings are also increasing day by day. We are
therefore modifying as well as destroying our natural surroundings. Humans have influenced the physical
environment in negative and positive ways. For example, humans have cleared forests to make buildings
to live in and work. The construction activities of humans have changed the natural landscape.

Q3 Describe the classification of the environment?

Ans. Environment is generally classified as natural, human made and human environment.
1. Natural Environment: consists of physical and biological environment for example lithosphere,
atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere.
2. Human made: is referred to as the surroundings made by humans to provide facilities for satisfying
human needs for example buildings, bridges, parks, roads, industries, monuments etc.
3. Human: reveals the activities, creations and interactions among human beings. For example, individual,
family, community, religion, economic and political situation.

Q4 How is biosphere important for the sustenance of human life?

Ans. Biosphere is important for sustenance of human life as it has all life supporting elements that are land, air
and water.

Q5 Give four examples of human-made environment. Why are they called so?

Ans. Roads, buildings, railways, cars, etc. are the examples of human-made environment. They are called so
because it refers to anything that has been created by humans.

Q6 List some environmental issues.

Ans. Today we have many environmental issues to address, like deforestation, poaching, overpopulation,
poverty (malnutrition, hunger and starvation), air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, noise
pollution, global warming, climate change etc.
