Literature Review
Summarize into fewer pages The literature review for this study encompasses several
PR-RSW 02 (understanding the key areas of focus: community spaces and their impact on
typology of your proposed
project) well-being, the role of mixed-use developments in
creating vibrant neighborhoods, the importance of
environmental sustainability and resilience in architectural
design, and the evolving expectations and functions of
Barangay Halls in the 21st century.
Community Spaces and Well-being: A wealth of literature
suggests that community spaces play a crucial role in
fostering a sense of well-being among residents. Parks and
recreation centers, for instance, provide opportunities for
socialization, leisure activities, and connection with nature,
all of which contribute to improved mental and physical
health (Francis et al., 2012). These spaces also serve as
communal gathering points, promoting social cohesion
and a sense of belonging within the community (Kweon et
al., 1998).
Mixed-Use Developments: Mixed-use developments,
which integrate residential, commercial, and civic
functions, have been shown to create vibrant, walkable
neighborhoods (Grant, 2002). These developments reduce
the need for long commutes, promote economic vitality,
and provide easy access to essential services and
amenities, thereby enhancing the livability of a community
(Talen, 2005).
Environmental Sustainability and Resilience: With the
increasing threats of climate change, there is a growing
interest in place types that promote environmental
sustainability and resilience. This involves the use of green
building practices, renewable energy sources, and

infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate
change (Dixon et al., 2008). Green spaces and energy-
efficient buildings not only reduce environmental impact
but also contribute to improved health and well-being
among residents (Bowler et al., 2010).
Barangay Halls in the 21st Century: The Barangay Hall, as a
community hub, is evolving in response to the changing
needs and expectations of the community it serves. The
project titled “A Bespoke Standardization and
Placemaking: The 21st-Century Barangay Hall in Bangar,
La Union” exemplifies this evolution. It embodies bespoke
standardization and innovative placemaking, standing as a
testament to the evolving architectural landscape in the
21st century (Woods, 2005). By incorporating elements of
responsive architecture, the project aims to create a
Barangay Hall that is adaptable, resilient, and capable of
meeting the diverse needs of the modern Filipino
community.
The literature review reveals that the key expectations of
the barangay revolve around the creation of spaces that
foster community and well-being, the promotion of mixed-
use developments, and the development of sustainable and
resilient infrastructure. These insights inform the design and
planning of the proposed Barangay Hall, helping to create a
more livable and sustainable community for the barangay.

Significance: I. To the Architecture Community (Design):

Why is this study important?
What is the relevance or
contribution—in terms of  For Planners and Architects: This study can serve as
theory? Method? Practical
application? Show how the

integrate climate resilience and community needs
into architectural design.
 For Architecture Students: This study can serve as a
source of inspiration and guidance for their design
projects and future thesis work. It demonstrates the
application of architectural theory and principles in
addressing real-world challenges.

II. To the Community:

 Social Impact: The project addresses the

community’s need for a comfortable, secure, and
functional space. It enhances the quality of life by

providing a resilient and adaptive community hub.

 Environmental Impact: The project promotes
environmental sustainability by incorporating
climate-resilient features and practices. It transforms
the barangay hall into a functional, sustainable, and
culturally significant space that effectively serves
the community’s needs.

This study is important as it addresses a gap in knowledge

and practice in the field of architecture, particularly in the
design of community spaces in the face of climate change.
It contributes to architectural theory by proposing a model
of responsive architecture that is both climate-resilient and
community-centric. In terms of practical application, the
study offers a tangible solution to the challenges faced by
communities due to climate change. It also has implications
for social action and policymaking, as it underscores the
role of architecture in enhancing community resilience and
sustainability.
Research Design
Research Method:
(Qualitative, This study will employ a Mixed Method approach. This
Quantitative, approach combines both qualitative and quantitative
Experimental or Mixed) research methods, allowing for a more comprehensive
understanding of the research problem. This approach is
chosen for several reasons:
1. Holistic Understanding: The mixed method
approach allows for a more comprehensive
understanding of the research problem. The
qualitative aspect of the research will help in
understanding the subjective experiences and
perceptions of the community members regarding
the current state of the barangay halls and their
expectations from it. On the other hand, the
quantitative aspect will provide measurable data
about the community’s needs and the current state
of the barangay halls, which can be statistically
analyzed to draw objective conclusions.
2. Triangulation: The mixed method approach allows
for triangulation, where the qualitative data can be
used to explore and explain the findings of the
quantitative data, and vice versa. This can increase
the validity and reliability of the research findings.
3. Flexibility: The mixed method approach is flexible
and adaptable. It allows the research to be tailored
according to the evolving needs of the study. For
Saint Louis College
Beacon of Wisdom in the North
City of San Fernando (La Union)
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE
instance, initial qualitative research might reveal
certain unexpected themes or issues, which can then
be further explored or tested through quantitative
methods.
4. Richer Data: The mixed method approach can
provide richer, more nuanced data. It allows for
capturing a wide range of perspectives and
experiences, which can lead to more robust and
insightful findings. This is particularly relevant for
your study as it deals with community perceptions
and needs, which can be complex and multifaceted.

In conclusion, the mixed method approach is chosen for

this study because it allows for a more thorough and
nuanced understanding of the research problem, increases
the validity of the findings through triangulation, provides
the flexibility to adapt the research according to emerging
themes and issues, and enables the collection of richer and
more comprehensive data. This approach aligns with the
goal of the study to create a climate-resilient and
community-centric barangay hall that effectively serves the
needs of the Bangar, La Union community.
data for this study will be collected from the following
sources:

enhance the quality of life by providing a resilient and
adaptive community hub. The project also promotes
environmental sustainability by incorporating climate-
resilient features and practices. This transformation
ensures that the Barangay Hall remains a functional
community hub even during extreme weather events,
thereby enhancing community resilience and
sustainability. The project, therefore, directly benefits
the community by addressing their needs and
enhancing their living conditions in the face of climate
change.

The expected output of this project includes:

1. Design Proposal: A comprehensive design proposal
for a climate-resilient and community-centric
Barangay Hall in Bangar, La Union. This proposal will
include detailed architectural plans, site
development plans, and a list of recommended
materials and technologies.
2. Community Engagement Plan: A plan for engaging
the community in the design and planning process.

funding sources.
4. Economic Benefits: The project is expected to bring
several economic benefits. The construction of the
new Barangay Hall will create jobs and stimulate
local economy. Once completed, the Barangay Hall
can serve as a hub for community activities, which
can attract visitors and stimulate local businesses.
The use of energy-efficient technologies and
renewable energy sources can also result in cost
savings over time.

Ethical Considerations
Several ethical considerations will be taken into account
during this project:
1. Community Involvement: The community will be
actively involved in the design and planning
process. Their needs, preferences, and cultural
practices will be respected and incorporated into
the design.
2. Environmental Sustainability: The project will strive
to minimize its environmental impact by using

sustainable materials and technologies, and by
incorporating features such as rainwater harvesting
and solar panels.
3. Respect for Local Culture and Heritage: The design
of the Barangay Hall will respect and reflect the local
culture and heritage of Bangar, La Union.
4. Equity and Inclusion: The Barangay Hall will be
designed to be accessible and inclusive, ensuring
that all members of the community can use and
benefit from it.
5. Transparency and Accountability: All stages of the
project, from planning to implementation, will be
conducted in a transparent and accountable manner.
