Departure for Spain May 3, 1882, Rizal departed on
board the Spanish steamer Salvadora that is bound for Singapore. On the same day he meticulously observed the people and things on board the steamer. May 9, 1882, the Salvadora docked at Singapore and stayed at Hotel De La Paz and stayed there for two days. May 11, 1882, Rizal boarded the ship Djemnah, a French steamer and left Singapore for Europe. While boarding in the ship he had daily conversation with French people and was able to improve his knowledge of French language. May 17, 1882, the Djemnah reached Point Galle and the next day the voyage resume towards Colombo, the capital of Ceylon. June 11, 1882, Rizal reached Naples and got fascinated by its people and scenic beauty. The night of June 12, the steamer docked at the French harbor of Marseilles. Marseilles He arrived in Marseilles on June 12, 1882 Rizal went to Marseilles in order to ride the train going to Barcelona otably, he visited the Chateau d’If, where Dantes (hero of the Count of Monte Cristo) was imprisoned. Rizal stayed in Barcelona from June 16, 1882, until the late part of the year. Wrote “El Amor Patrio” (Love of Country) his first publication abroad and sent it to friend Basilio Teodora of Diaryong Tagalog Madrid November 3, 1882, Rizal enrolled in Universidad Central de Madrid and took up courses Medicine and Philosophy and Letters. He also studied painting and sculpture in the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He took lesson in French, German, and English, under private instructors, and assiduously practiced fencing and shooting in the Hall of Arms of Sanz y Carbonell. In March 1883, he joined the Masonic lodge called Acacia in Madrid to secure Freemasonry’s aid in his fight against the friars in the Philippines. Later he was transferred to Lodge Solidaridad and became a Master Mason on November 15, 1890. Still later, he was awarded the diploma as Master Mason by Le Grand Orient de France in Paris. On June 21, 1884, Rizal completed his medical course in Spain, he conferred the degree of licentiate in Medicine by the Universidad Central de Madrid, he studied and passed all his subjects leading to degree of Doctor of Medicine and in Philosophy and Letters with excellent ratings. Paris In 1885, he went to Paris in order
to acquire more knowledge in ophthalmology in the age of 24. He worked as an apprentice of Dr. Louis de Weckert, a leading French ophthalmologist. By working under his master, he knowledge in ophthalmology improved. Rizal visits his friends in his day off in the clinic, Luna discussed with Riza about his various problem on arts and improvements in painting technique. Berlin Rizal was in Berlin from Nov. 1, 1886, to May 11, 1887 Was with Maximo Viola starting Dec. 11. Thanks to his support Noli Me Tangere was published here. Rizal was almost deported when he surrendered no passport to the police. After receiving 1000 pesos allowance from Paciano, Rizal and Viola left Berlin at the dawn of May 11, 1887 (spring) and began their trip to several cities in Europe after the successful release of Noli Me Tangere.
