Filipino Gay Movies: Homophobia is a thing in the past

(Research Proposal)

1. Introduction:
Gay movies appeared in the Philippine cinema with more than six decades
after introducing of the motion picture in the Philippines, this study will track the
changes in the representation and how these movies pave way to the acceptance of
gay people to the society at present. There are so many people who has this attitude
called homophobia, it is a negative feeling towards a homosexual person. This
behavior is expressed through the use of negative comments, bullying, physical
attacks and discrimination. In the past Filipino gay movies, gays are being treated
drastically in such a way that they are being discriminated and do not accept by the
society specially their families and in work. With that, some moviegoers could not
come out because they are not ready to face the consequences that these films
portray.
Years had passed, Filipino Film makers are slowly reshaping the life of a
gay person because of what the society tell. Filipino gay movies become
instruments in creating new opportunities of respect and acceptance therefore
because of the increasing number of gay movies this barrier and discrimination has
diminished.
During the 1980s and the 1990s, gays have begun to find public life "'more
conducive'" (IPS 18 Jan. 2002). The first Gay Pride march in Asia took place in the
Philippines in 1994 (ibid.), and today Gay Pride month is used as a forum for
communicating key issues of concern to the gay community, including
empowerment and social acceptance
Since approximately the beginning of the new millennium, gay rights
activists in the Philippines have lobbied for the legalization of same-sex unions and
the rights of "homosexual-led families"

2. Objectives:
1) To examine whether reshaping the life of a gay people in a Filipino film
change the people perspective.
2) To identify the cause of the Filipino gay movies on the current situation of
Filipino gays.
3) To determine the how these Filipino gay movies become an instrument of
acceptance to the society.

3. Data Gathering Method


The Researchers will gather information by using interview method. It aims
to acquire information from the respondents by answering some questions. The
interview will help the researchers to accomplished this research proposal.

4. Purpose of the Study


The purpose of the study is to understand on how Filipino people see these
different Filipino gay movies in such a way that it can create path to end the
discrimination to a homosexual person.

 Literature Review
 Gather Information (Through interview)
 Determining whether these Filipino movies change the society’s perception to a
gay person.
 Findings/Conclusion

6. Conclusion
The study aims to determine are these Filipino gay – themed movies have impacts
when it comes with the key issues of concern to the gay community, including
empowerment and social acceptance and to the lives of each Filipino gay.
