1) Make the greatest and the smallest 4-digit numbers using any four different
digits by keeping the digit 7 at the one's place.
2) A teacher wrote 1238423 on the board. Ravi and Sarath raised their hands
to read the number.
Ravi: The number is one thousand two hundred thirty-eight thousand four
hundred twenty-three.
Sarath: The number is twelve lakhs thirty-eight thousand four hundred
twenty-three.
Who is correct? If both are correct, which is easier to understand?
3) Have you ever wondered how would we have counted bigger quantities
without use of ‘0’?
Using the 10 digits/ symbols that are 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7.8.9 we can count any
quantity in the world.
Let’s say you count the number of students in your school. And because of
the number system, you can easily say something like:” There are even
hundred forty-five students in the school”. And anyone listening to you will
easily understand how many students are in your school.
a) But assume if 0 would not have been invented and only digits from 1 to
9 are there, how would you have counted the 11th cow?

(Hints: you can come up with a new symbol for the number that will
come after 9.)
