HOW ANIMALS ARE USED IN RESEARCH

1. From the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9OiEAWbU-M, name the
animal and state their importance in research.

Animal Importance in Research

• Research into cancer because they are

biologically similar to human.

Mice

• Used to study tuberculosis and stroke due

to share 70% of the same genes with
human.

Zebrafish

• Used to test asthma drugs due to dog lungs

are similar with human lungs.

Dog

• Used to study vision because monkey have

binocular vision like human

HUMANE KILLING
1. After some procedures, it may be necessary to kill the animal to prevent further
suffering. The person who conducted the procedure must ensure that the animal is
killed competently and humanely. List out the appropriate methods used in humane
killing for the animals in research. Refer to
https://www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk/what-is-animal-research/understandi
ng-animal-procedures/reducing-suffering/
a) Anesthetic overdose
b) Exposure to carbon dioxide gas
c) Dislocation of the neck
d) Concussion followed by the destruction of the brain
e) Destruction of the brain by a free bullet (for hoofed animals only)

2. From the video https://youtu.be/2Du0h270a-c, what method is used to sacrifice the

animal?

Exposure to carbon dioxide gas.

5. From the veterinarian surgeon point of view, https://youtu.be/ezt9p00PSOg. List

out the important roles of a veterinarian.
a) Animal healthcare such as diagnosing conditions and treating illnesses and injuries in
animals.
b) Engaging in scientific research to advance veterinary medicine and improve
understanding of animal diseases.
c) Promoting animal welfare by advising and educating owners on how to care for their pets.

6. The carcass must be disposed of properly. By referring to the video, describe how you
would dispose of the carcass in the lab. https://youtu.be/VDiGd4620ac
By, put the carcass in biohazard bag and sealed as soon as possible. There are three common
effective methods of carcass disposal which are incineration, burying, and rendering.
Incineration is the method that always used when dealing with the carcass especially when the
carcass had diseased; however, it can also be the most expensive. An acceptable alternative is to
bury the carcass. The carcass would be buried at least 4 feet deep and covered with lime to
discourage scavengers from uncovering and consuming it.
