MAY X MIGHT
(meeeeiii - maaaait)

The phrases:
"it may rain tomorrow"
and
"it might rain tomorrow"

are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation to indicate the

possibility of rain. However, there are a few between "may" and "might."

Degree of Possibility:
May: Generally suggests a slightly higher likelihood or probability. It conveys a
more immediate or realistic possibility.
Example: "It may rain tomorrow, so you might want to carry an umbrella."
Might: Often implies a more remote or uncertain possibility. It can suggest a
lower chance or a hypothetical scenario.
Example: "It might rain tomorrow, but the forecast is unclear."
it might rain tomorrow.

likelihood - possibilidade

conveys - transmite

slightly - fracamente, pouco, leve.

forecast - previsao do tempo.

Formality:
May: Considered slightly more formal and is often used in written and spoken
contexts where formality is preferred.
Example: "The event may be postponed due to weather conditions."
Might: Slightly less formal and more common in everyday speech.
Example: "We might go to the park if it doesn't rain."
postponed - adiado

due to - por conta de

Historical Usage:

I MAY
I MIGHT

May: Traditionally used for present or future possibilities.

Might: Historically, it was the past tense of "may," though this distinction is largely
obsolete in modern English except in reported speech.
Example of historical use: "She said it might rain tomorrow."
Hypothetical Situations:

May: Can be used for permission or to suggest that something is allowed.

Example: "You may leave early if your work is done."
Might: Often used to express hypothetical or less likely conditions.
Example: "If you hurry, you might catch the bus."
In summary, while "it may rain tomorrow" and "it might rain tomorrow" can be
used interchangeably in many contexts, "may" often suggests a higher probability
or a more formal tone, while "might" indicates a lower probability or a more
casual tone.

Fun story related to our material:

Once upon a time in a small village, there lived a young

boy named Tom. Tom loved to climb trees and play
basketball. One day, his friend Alec came to visit him. Alec
was known for being very fast and always won the races
they had.

"Tom, let's race to the old oak tree!" Alec challenged.

"Sure," Tom replied. "But you should know that I might win
today. I've been practicing a lot."

As they raced, Tom noticed something unusual. "Whose

cat is on the tree?" he asked.
"It's Mona's cat," Alec said. "She must be looking for it."

Tom and Alec decided to help Mona. They carefully

climbed the tree and brought the cat down safely. Mona
was very grateful.

"Thank you so much! Can I do anything for you?" Mona

asked.

"Well, could you teach me how to dance?" Tom asked

shyly.

"Of course, I can teach you," Mona replied with a smile.

Later that day, Tom and Alec went to the supermarket to

buy some snacks. They met Tom's parents there. "Where
are your parents?" Tom asked Alec.

"They are at the supermarket too," Alec replied. "They are

buying groceries."

After shopping, Tom and Alec talked about their plans for
the summer. "Where will you spend your birthday?" Alec
asked.
"In Manaus, I think," Tom said. "How about you?"

"I might go to Paris," Alec said. "My parents are planning a

trip, and we will go by plane."

As they walked home, they saw a shiny new bike. "Whose

bike is it?" Tom wondered.

"It's very expensive," Alec noted. "It might be John's bike.

He just bought a new one."

The next day, Tom's sister asked him, "Can you help me
with my homework?"

"Sure, I can help," Tom said. "But I might need some help
with my own homework too."

Tom's sister laughed. "We can help each other. By the

way, how will you spend your weekend?"

"I will practice basketball," Tom replied. "I want to be as

fast as Alec."
That evening, their friend Jake visited. "Jake, do you like
sports?" Tom asked.

"I like basketball," Jake said. "But I prefer soccer."

The friends spent the evening talking about their favorite

sports and planning a game for the next day. Tom was so
excited. "I want to play with you guys so bad," he said. "If I
go, I will bring snacks for everyone."

"That's great!" Alec said. "We could all have a picnic after
the game."

Tom's mother called them for dinner. "You need to eat,"

she said. "You must be hungry after all that running
around."

Tom looked at his plate. "I don't like broccoli," he said.

"You should eat it," his mother insisted. "It's good for you."

After dinner, Tom was tired. "I'm so tired," he said. "I need
to sleep early tonight."
His sister laughed. "You might be too tired tomorrow if you
don't rest."

Tom nodded. "You're right. Goodnight, everyone."

As Tom lay in bed, he thought about the fun day he had

and all the adventures he shared with his friends. He knew
that tomorrow would be another exciting day filled with
more stories to tell.
