A. Awareness

Good morning, students Good morning, Ma’am

Everyone, let us all bow down our

head and pray to our Almighty Father.

In the name of Father and of the son In the name of Father and of the
and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

us from evil. Amen.
 Greetings
Good day students.
Good morning, Ma’am.
Okay everyone, you may now take
your seats. (Students will take their seats)

Before we proceed, let us have first a

recap of our past lesson. Who among
you can still remember or define the
critical reading that was discussed
yesterday? When you read something and
you evaluate claims, seek
definitions, judge information,
demand proof, and question
assumptions, you are thinking
critically.
Very good!

B. Activity (Motivation)

Now, let us have a short activity before

we begin to our new lesson. This game
is called “Is it a Fact or Bluff”.

All you need to do is to answer each

statement if it is a Fact or a Bluff by
writing it on the illustration board
provided.

But before that, I will divide you into 5

groups. (The teacher will group the
class into five.)

And before you go to your group

mates, each group must have their (Students will group themselves)
respective leaders.
(The teacher will distribute to each
group the illustration board after the
groupings.)
or

So here’s the catch, every statement

contains 2 points each. Your groups
score will be added to your group
activity to be specified later.

“Am I understood?” “Are you ready?”

Yes, Ma’am!

1. The Philippines is the world’s

number one producer of 1. Fact
coconut.
2. The third largest English
speaking country in the world is 2. Fact
the Philippines.
3. The largest lake in the
Philippines is Taal lake. 3. Bluff
4. Lebanon is the only country in
the Middle East in which there is 4. Fact
no dessert.
5. Red pepper is the most popular
spice in the world. 5. Bluff
6. Saudi Arabia has the largest
Muslim population in the world. 6. Bluff

Okay. Did you enjoy the game? Give

yourselves a round of applause!
Yes, Ma’am!
What do this information gives us?
Ma’am, it tells us about the truth
and a bluff.

Do you believe those facts and

information? Yes, Ma’am because these
information are proven.
What do you call a statement that
persuades, and convinces the
readers?

Who can guess the answer?

(The teacher will give some clues to

the learners.) Ma’am, it’s a claim.

Very good.

C. Analysis ( Presentation of the

lesson)

Then, who wants to define it with

his/her own definition? Ma’am, it means to say that
(something) is true when some
people may say it is not true.
Correct! Then, can you give an
example? (Students will answer.)

In other words, claim persuades,

argues convinces, prove, or
provocatively suggest something to a
reader who may or may not initially
agree with you.

e.g:
Instagram is owned by Facebook.

D. Abstraction

And when we say claim, it has its

types. Let’s start!

Actually, there are three types of

claims. Fact, Value and Policy.

1. Claim of Fact: a claim assert

some empirical truth.
 Something that can be
determined by careful
observation of past,
present, or future.
 Generally, the truth of the
assertion will be
determined by events.
But the speaker will offer
information or
explanation that predicts
or characterizes the
events.
 Claims of fact are those
we think about rightly as
being true or false. Of
course, sometimes we
cannot prove something
true or false, but we have
to say ‘How likely is it
that it is true?” But the
reasons we give are the
reasons we believe the
statement is true or false.

Examples:
 Climate Change has
already become an issue
in the country.
 Success of teaching
depends upon the
creativity of the teacher.

2. Claim of Judgement or Value:

A claim asserts a judgement of
some sort.
 Look for key words that
are a matter of
judgement rather than
fact: good, well, kind,
useful, desirable, etc.
 A claim is based on
things we like or dislike.
Thus it deals with goals,
with things we find
attractive.

Examples:
 Musical comedy is the
best form of
entertainment.
 Staying with the family
with a limited income
is more valuable than
being away earning a
lot.
 Communication is
better than
computation.

3. Claim Action or Policy: A

claim asserts that an action
should be taken.
 Be sensitive to calls that
some action be taken.
 Decisions about whether
we should take an action
or not are the most
complex of arguments.
They turn on many
claims about what
happens if we do take an
action or what happens if
we fail to act.
 Arguments usually turns
on whether the reasons
for taking the action
outweigh the possible
costs of taking the action.

Examples:
 Fetal tissue should be
banned in any
research undertaking.
 The government
should continue to
offer scholarship
programs especially to
the poor but bright
students.
 Gender equality needs
to be strengthened in
the academe.
E. Application

below, taken from or inspired by the
previous text, as a claim of fact, value,
