Cooling load
estimation
(detailed)

Ducting design (if ducted system is chosen)

Piping design & (if water-cooled/indirect

pump selection expansion system is chosen)
Example:
Consider a 6-storey building (use for offices and laboratories)
Total floor area: 40,000 sq. ft.
Check figure: 75 Btu/hr per sq. ft. (Average for offices – private)
→ Estimated total cooling load = 3,000,000 Btu/hr (250 RT)

Options and costs:

→ Split unit: RM 5,000 per RT (Cost: RM 1.25 mil)
→ Air-cooled chiller: RM 5,000 per RT (Cost: RM 1.25 mil)
→ VRF: RM 6,500 per RT (Cost: RM 1.625 mil) (30% extra)
TYPE OF AC SYSTEM

Type Application Capacity (RT)

Split/Multi Split/VRF Small room/space < 5 for S/MS

5 – 45 for VRV

Air-Cooled Packaged Medium space and 5 – 35

Unit difficult to get water
supply

Water-Cooled Packaged Medium space 10 – 55

Unit
Air-Cooled Chilled Water Medium - large 40 – 250

1. Introduction
REPORT STRUCTURE
- Building or room/space/zone description (location, purpose, size etc)

2. Methodology
- Method for calculation (e.g. E20 method for cooling load estimation, equal friction
method for duct design etc)
- Assumption (No of window, type, no of pax, equipment etc)

3. Calculation
- Cooling load estimation (Rule of Thumb)
- Propose few systems and costing (refer to recommended pricing)
- System selection → Select the best system among the options and justification (attach
manufacturer catalogue)
- Detailed cooling load estimation → Use Excel spreadsheet
- Ducting design (if ducted system is chosen) → Both manual method (friction chart),
ductulator or software (screenshot) can be used
- Piping design and pump sizing (if water-cooled/indirect expansion system is chosen)

4. Result and Discussion

- Determine Btu/sq ft and compare with check figure
- Discuss overall result

5. Conclusion
