IoT ENABLED AUTOMATIC

AQUAPONICS
SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
• Aquaponics refers to the combination of any conventional aquaculture
system with hydroponics in a single symbiotic environment.
• In this system, ammonia rich fish wastes from the aquaculture tanks are pumped
to the hydroponic beds. These fish wastes are converted into organic fertilizers
needed for growing plants.
• In return, the plant roots filters and treats the water for habitation of the fishes,
which is then recycled back into the aquaculture tanks
Contd…..
• Automation of the system using IoT aims at making it a standalone
device.
• Sensor unit interfaced with microcontroller continuously monitors
essential parameters .
• Data collected is stored into cloud and control can be done both offline
and online.
OBJECTIVES
• To monitor the system using mobile phone application and thereby
reducing the barricade of human involvement in feeding ,filtering and
air pumping in domesticated fishery system.
• To make this system a standalone device, by controlling entities such
as motor pump, valves and feeder.
• To continuously monitor pH, temperature and turbidity of water using
mobile phone and to ensure stable habitat of fish life and plants.
SYSTEM OVERVIEW
BLOCK DIAGRAM
HARDWARE COMPONENTS
pH Sensor
Tolerable pH range is between 6-7. Excretions by fish causes
fluctuations in pH, normally water turns basic in nature. To
counterbalance, required amount of water is drained from the
fish tank and fresh water enters from the main tank.
Turbidity Sensor
The turbidity of water in the fish tank increases due to fish pH sensor module
waste depending on its size and composition. Turbidity sensor
monitors the degree of turbidity.
Turbidity Sensor Temperature Sensor dsb18b20

Temperature Sensor
The desired temperature for stable aquatic life ranges from 20 to 30 degree celcius.
The sensor continuously acquires temperature values and whenever it goes beyond
the range , water drains from the fish tank and freshwater enters from the main tank
so as to nullify the effective temperature change.
Magnetic float switches
It consists of two logic states; logic zero and logic one. When water level is higher
than preset value its logic one else its logic zero.
Motors
The system consists of a motor pump, aerator pump and valves. All can be driven
from the 12v line of solar panel installed.
Fish Feeder
Fish feeder consists of a gear motor and a funnel
for uniform distribution. Quantity of food and number
of times of distribution can be preset.

Online and offline Communication
There are two modes of monitoring ;online and offline .
A NodeMCU is used for online monitoring. WiFi module in it
connects to a database through which sensor controlling takes
place.
In offline monitoring a hotspot is created through the WiFi
module and through this hotspot the system is connected and
controlled .This can be easily monitored using the android NodeMCU
application created.
CONCLUSION
• Automation of aquaponics system can be effectively done using IoT.
• The system enables complete control and analysis using mobile application achieving all the standards of a
standalone device.
• Data collected via sensors and stored in cloud database and monitored and controlled by microcontroller
makes the system an efficient one.
• Aquaponics system being a source of balanced food production system which requires very less space and
very less human efforts can be implemented in the terrace of houses.
• It is less time consuming and attention seeking. The only action required is to monitor using mobile phone.
• Hence automating this system has a great potential to evolve as a game changer.
