Bridge

The Pamban railway bridge spans a
2.06 km (1.28 mi) wide strait
between the Indian mainland and
Rameshwaram Island. The mainland
end of the bridge is located at
9°16′56.70″N 79°11′20.12″E. The

LOCATION OF THE HOWRAH
BRIDGE

The Howrah Bridge is a balanced steel
bridge over the Hooghly River in West
Bengal, India. Commissioned in 1943, the
bridge was named the New Howrah Bridge,
because it replaced a pontoon bridge at
the same location linking the twin cities
of Howrah and Kolkata, which are located
at the opposite banks of each other. The
bridge is one of four on the Hooghly River
and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and
West Bengal.

. It was known as and a reputed cantilever Bridge and is the third largest bridge of its kind in
the World having a over-all length if 2150 feet with a single span of 1500 feet. The new Howrah
Bridge was designed by M/s. Rendell, Palmer and Tritton, consulting Engineers. It took 8 years to
complete the bridge and 26,000 tons of steel including 18,200 tons of high tensile quality were
