CHEMICAL REACTION AND EQUATIONS

Class 10 - Science June Monthly Test 2024-2025

Maximum Marks: 30

Section A (1 Mark)
1. A student added zinc granules to copper sulphate solution taken in a test tube. Out of the following, the
correct observations made by the student will be
A. Zinc granules have no regular shape.
B. Zinc granules have silvery grey colour.
C. The colour of zinc granules changed to brownish-black.

a) C only b) B only

c) A only d) All of these

2. In which of the following beakers reaction will take place?

[1]
a) I and IV only b) III and IV only

c) I and III only d) II and IV only

3. Chemically rust is:
[1]

a) Metal oxide b) Ferric oxide

c) Ferrous oxide d) Hydrated ferric oxide

1/3
4. Slaked lime is the commercial name of:
[1]

a) Calcium carbonate b) Calcium hydroxide

c) Calcium oxide d) Calcium bicarbonate

5. Study the following chemical reaction:

2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g)↑ The reducing agent in this reaction is

a) Na b) H2

c) H2O d) NaOH

Section B ( 2 Marks )
6. A silver article generally turns black when kept in the open for a few days. The article when rubbed with tooth
paste again starts shinning. Why do silver articles turn black when kept in the open for a few days? Name the
phenomenon involved.
7. A copper plate was dipped into a solution of silver nitrate. After sometime, a black layer was observed on the
surface of copper plate. State the reason for it and write the chemical equation of the reaction involved.
8. What happens to lime water when CO2 gas is bubbled through it in excess?

Section C
(3 Marks)
9. i. What happens when a solution of potassium iodide is added to a solution of lead nitrate taken in a test tube?
ii. What type of reaction is this?
iii. Write a balanced chemical equation to represent the above reaction.

10. A compound A is used in the manufacture of cement. When dissolved in water, it evolves a large amount of heat and
forms compound B.
i. Identify A and B.
ii. Write chemical equation for the reaction of A with water.
iii. List two types of reaction in which this reaction may be classified.
11. Why are decomposition reactions called the opposite of combination reactions? Write equations for
these reactions.

Section D ( 5 Marks)

12.Two metals X and Y form the salts XSO 4 and Y2SO4, respectively. The solution of salt XSO 4 is blue in colour
whereas that of Y 2SO4 is colourless. When barium chloride solution is added to XSO 4 solution, then a white
precipitate Z is formed along with a salt which turns the solution green. And when barium chloride solution is added
to Y2SO4 solution, then the same white precipitate Z is formed along with colourless common salt solution.
(a) What could the metals X and Y be ?
(b) Write the name and formula of salt XSO4.
(c) Write the name and formula of salt Y2SO4.
(d) What is the name and formula of white precipitate Z ?
(e)Write the name and formula of the salt which turns the solution green in the first case

13.Give reasons for the following:

(i) All decomposition reactions are endothermic reactions.

2/3
(ii) Colour of copper sulphate solution changes when an iron nail is dipped in it.
(iii) Respiration is an exothermic reaction.
(iv)Copper articles turn green when kept in the open for a few days.
(v) Silver chloride is kept in dark coloured bottles.

from the solution.

i. What do you think substance A would be?
ii. Name the yellow substance which separates out.
iii. Write the characteristic of chemical reactions which is illustrated by this example.
iv. Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction which takes place. Mention the physical states of all the
reactants and products involved in the chemical equation.
12. Write balanced chemical equations when:
i. Electric current is passed through aluminium oxide.
ii. The reaction of lead and copper chloride solution.
iii. Copper oxide and hydrogen
iv. The reaction of iron oxide and aluminium
v. Carbon dioxide and water
