Osmosis

Diffusion

Solvent
The diffusion of a solvent (e.g. water) across a semipermeable
membrane from an area of high concentration to and area of
low concentration.

Movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to

an area of low concentration

A liquid in which substances (solutes) can dissolve into (e.g.

water)
Solute

Semipermeable Membrane

Concentration Gradient
Substances/particles that can dissolve in liquids (e.g. salt)

A barrier that will only allow some molecules to pass through

while blocking the passage of others

The difference in concentration of particles in a solution.

Equilibrium

Osmotic Pressure
The concentration of the solute is the same throughout the
entire solution OR having equal osmotic pressure across the
entire solution

The minimum pressure needed to stop osmosis. Occurs when

the solution reaches equilibrium.
