Week 5 Written Homework Due 7/10 Name:

Please write complete and legible solutions to these problems, using complete sentences to explain your
logic when appropriate. Show all necessary work to get to the solution; answers without work
will not earn full credit. Upload one .pdf document of your solutions. Assignments that are not in
.pdf format, or that are not compressed into one file will not be graded.
Resources Allowed: You may consult your notes, any materials from class, and the textbook. You are
encouraged to visit your instructors’ office hours. If you work with a classmate, make sure that any
writing or drawings you submit are your own work. Online “tutoring” sites like Chegg or Quizlett are
NOT approved resources and you do not have approval to post anything from this assignment to these
websites or similar.

1. In the given axes, draw an example of a graph that satisfies the statement.

(a) (2 points) A graph with f ′ (−1) = 0 and a local maximum at x = −1.

(b) (2 points) A graph with f ′ (−1) = 0 and no local extrema at x = −1.

1
(c) (2 points) A graph where f ′ (1) is undefined and there is a local minimum at x = 1.

(d) (2 points) A graph that has both a local maximum and minimum at x = 0.

(e) (2 points) A graph where f ′ (2) is undefined, and x = 2 is an inflection point.

2. Consider the function f (x) = − 1.
x+2
(a) (1 point) What is the domain of f (x)?

(b) (1 point) Compute f ′ (x).

(c) (1 point) Find all critical points of f (x). (Hint: revisit the definition of critical point.)

(d) (1 point) Make a first derivative sign chart for f (x) to list the intervals of increase and
decrease.

3
(e) (1 point) Use part (b) to classify all the critical points from part (c) as corresponding to local
maxima, minima or neither.

(f) (1 point) Compute f ′′ (x).

(g) (1 point) Find all x-values where f ′′ (x) is neither positive nor negative.

(h) (1 point) Use a second derivative sign chart to find the intervals of concave up and concave
down of f (x).

4
(i) (1 point) Which of the points from part (g) are inflection points?

(j) (1 point) Use your work up to this point to sketch a graph of f (x) without technology.

3. (5 points) A farmer needs to fence in a rectangular field. Looking at the field from above, the cost
of the vertical sides are $10 per foot, the cost of the bottom is $2 per foot, and the cost of the top
is $7 per foot. If the farmer has $700, determine the dimensions of the field that will maximize the
enclosed area. (Hint: Start by drawing a picture. Create an equation that represents the quantity
you want to optimize, and another equation for the constraint.)
