Written Homework 3 Due 6/26 Name:

Please write complete and legible solutions to these problems, using complete sentences to explain your
logic when appropriate. Show all necessary work to get to the solution; answers without work
will not earn full credit. Upload one .pdf document of your solutions. Assignments that are not in
.pdf format, or that are not compressed into one file will not be graded.
Resources Allowed: You may consult your notes, any materials from class, and the textbook. You are
encouraged to visit your instructors’ office hours. If you work with a classmate, make sure that any
writing or drawings you submit are your own work. Online “tutoring” sites like Chegg or Quizlett are
NOT approved resources and you do not have approval to post anything from this assignment to these
websites or similar.
1. Answer the questions below using the following graph of h(x).

(a) (1 point) On what x interval(s) is h(x) > 0?

(b) (1 point) On what x interval(s) is h(x) < 0?

(c) (1 point) For which value(s) of x is h(x) = 0?

1
(d) (1 point) On what x interval(s) is h′ (x) > 0?

(e) (1 point) On what x interval(s) is h′ (x) < 0?

(f) (1 point) For which value(s) of x is h′ (x) = 0?

(g) (1 point) On what x interval(s) is h′′ (x) > 0?

(h) (1 point) On what x interval(s) is h′′ (x) < 0?

(i) (1 point) For which value(s) of x is h′′ (x) = 0?

(j) (1 point) Use your work in parts (a)-(i) to sketch h′ (x) on the graph of h(x) (in another color).

2. A ball is thrown vertically upward. It’s height (in meters) above the ground is modeled by the
function s(t) = −4.9t2 + 11t at time t seconds.

(a) (1 point) Sketch a graph of s(t) (you want to do this without technology; think about the
context of the problem).

(b) (1 point) Find the velocity function v(t). Include the units.

(c) (2 points) At what time does the ball reach it’s peak? Hint: what will the velocity function
be equal to at the position functions peak?

(d) (1 point) Find the acceleration function a(t). Include the units.

3. (5 points) For each of the graphs below, put a box around (the entire graph of) any graph that
is differentiable (on the axes shown). If a graph is not differentiable, circle the location(s) on the
graph that are not differentiable. If you need to, carefully redraw the graphs below on a piece of
paper to answer this question.

4. Use the derivative rules to compute the following derivatives. Simplify algebraically first so that all
of your terms clearly look like power functions, and then apply the power rule or other derivative
rules to compute the derivative f ′ (x).

(a) (1 point) f (x) = x3 + 4x−1 + 2

5
(b) (1 point) f (x) = 1
4x 2

(c) (1 point) f (x) = ex − xπ

1
(d) (1 point) f (x) = x2
+ 5x9

x3
(e) (1 point) f (x) = x2
+ x−4 + e
