Difficulty: Advanced Beginner

Size: 30 x 43 cm/ 12” x 17”

Materials needed:

 6 mm (J) size hook


 Cascata by Hobbii:
Niagara (06) 80 grams (160 m/175 yards)
 Yarn needle for weaving in ends
 Scissors
 Stitch markers (optional)

Stitches Used and Abbreviations:

CH = chain SC = single crochet


SK = skip DC = double crochet
SP = space 2DCCL = two double crochet cluster
SLST = slip stitch Cluster V ST = cluster v stitch
ST/STS= stitch/ stitches
{ } = indicates how many stitches go into the same stitch or used to repeat a small set of instructions
between these brackets the number of times given
[ ] = used to repeat a longer set of instructions between these brackets, the number of times given
(This is only used for a full repeat, may contain smaller repeats)

Special Stitches:

2 Double Crochet Cluster (2DCCL):

1. Yarn over hook, insert hook in indicated stitch/space, yarn over,pull through, yarn over, pull
through 2 loops, leave the stitch unfinished. (2 loops on hook)
2. Yarn over, insert hook in same indicated stitch/space, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull
through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

Cluster V Stitch (Cluster V ST):

2DCCL in indicated stitch/space, chain 1, 2DCCL in same stitch/space.

Gauge: not critical for this project but may affect the yarn quantities required
4 Cluster V STS and 6 rows = 4" / 10 cm

Additional notes:

 If a row/round starts with a CH 1, CH 2 or CH 3, that is not counted as a stitch, unless stated


otherwise.
 US terms used throughout.
 At the end of every row, there’s going to be a note with the stitch count, so you can keep
track of your work easily and avoid any mistakes. It’s written in a different color in bold. For
the border round, I included a stitch count per short/long side (excluding corner stitches) and
per corner too, in case you prefer it that way.
 Notes are written in a different color in (brackets) to help you through the pattern or tell you
which stitches to work into or skip.
 You can start each row as I did in the pattern or you can use a standing stitch or chains, it’s
totally up to you!
 You can easily adjust the width of your placemat: the starting chain should be multiples of
3+5 chains.

Instructions

To start: CH 56

Row 1: 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook, (Note: you can work into the back bumps of your chains if you
prefer) 1 SC in each CH to end
TURN
(55 SC)

Row 2: CH 1, 1 DC in same ST, SK 2 STS, [Cluster V ST in next ST, SK 2 STS] 17 times, 1 DC in last ST
TURN
(2 DC, 17 x Cluster V ST)
Row 3: CH 1, 1 DC in same ST (alternatively, you can CH 2/3 or use the stacked single crochet method.

1 Cluster V ST in each CH 1 SP to end, 1 DC in last ST
TURN
(2 DC, 17 x Cluster V ST)
Rows 4-17: Repeat Row 3.

Row 18: (Note: in this row you put 2 SC in the first and last CH 1 SP, the other CH 1 spaces have only 1
SC!) CH 1, 1 SC in same ST, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL), 2 SC in next CH 1 SP, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL), [1 SC
in next ST (2DCCL), 1 SC in next CH 1 SP, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL)] 15 times, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL), 2
SC in next CH 1 SP, 1 SC in next ST (2DCCL), 1 SC in last ST
TURN
Fasten off.

Border

2, 1 SC} in next ST, SC 32 evenly on short side, {1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC} in next ST, 1 SC in next 53 STS, {1 SC,
CH 2, 1 SC} in next ST, SC 32 evenly on short side, join with a SLST to first SC
Fasten off.
Total: 170 SC
Long Side: 53 SC
Short Side: 32 SC
Corner: 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC
