Introduction

In this day and age, the use of social networking sites has
become more of a necessity rather than a way to pass
time. Social media is now significant in almost every
field, be it education, business or politics. It is not
uncommon to see children as young as eight years old
being extremely active on these sites and show huge
interest in social media’s buzz and trends. Although social
networking sites have their own benefits, there are a
number of hazards that accompany these sites. Some of
the dangers of social networking sites include falling
victim to cyber- crimes, cyber- bullying, scams etc.
In order to study the usage of social networking sites by
people of different age–groups living in Al Ain city, a
survey was conducted in the form of a questionnaire. The
questionnaire was handed out to 32 randomly selected
people living in Al Ain city, who were asked to fill up a
number of questions which were required to study
people’s social media- usage habits, their trust in the
security system of these sites and whether or not the
person has been a victim of any sort of cyber-crime. Both
qualitative and quantitative variables were used for data
collection.
