ROUTE A
Professional Assessment Examination
I. has obtained 3 years practical experience as specified in Regulation 22(1) which shall include
the following:
a. at least two years of general training that will provide a sound basis for professional
development; and
b. at least one year of professional career development and training providing wide exposure
to the various managerial and technical expertise in engineering practice where;
c. at least one year of the above training must be obtained in Malaysia under the supervision of
a Professional Engineer in the same branch of engineering as that practised by the Graduate
Engineer.
❑ Professional Engineers in other related branches of engineering may be accepted with
the prior approval of the Board
II. has passed a Professional Assessment Examination conducted by the Board;

ROUTE B
Route for a Professional Engineer from an overseas Regulatory Body
I. Applicant shall pass Code of Conduct Assessment based on Registration of Engineers Act
1967 (Revised 2015);
II. Applicant shall submit to BEM a certified latest Professional Engineer Certificate issued by a
Regulatory Body of other country;
III. The professional engineers status shall be check that it is equivalent to BEM’s professional
engineer qualifications eligibility;
IV. The applicant is not entitle to be registered as a Professional Engineer if at any time prior to
his registration there exist any facts or circumstances which would have entitled the
Disciplinary Committee to cancel his registration pursuant to Section 15 of the Registration of
Engineers Act 1967 (Revised 2015);
V. Summary of practical experience not less than 3 years using company letterhead certified by a
Professional Engineer in same branch of engineering at which the applicant did his practical
experience and;
VI. has complied with the requirements as determined by the Board.

ROUTE C
Corporate Member of IEM
I. A Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM)
II. has complied with the requirements as determined by the Board as follows:
a. has obtained 3 years practical experience as specified in Regulation 22(1) which shall
include the following:
i. at least two years of general training that will provide a sound basis for professional
development; and
ii. at least one year of professional career development and training providing wide
exposure to the various managerial and technical expertise in engineering practice
where;
iii. at least one year of the above training must be obtained in Malaysia under the supervision

DESIGN EXPERIENCE • Period, in months, of training and experience that the candidate
spends in an office environment to plan, manage and execute design
work, feasibility study, development work, or operation and
maintenance work under a Supervising Engineer (preferably CEng /
PEng)

SITE EXPERIENCE ▪ Period of training and experience of the candidate during which he
spends his time in the site / field either supervising an engineering
work or being involved in operation work.
▪ Site / field experience shall not consist merely of routine site / field
inspections or attending site meetings
▪ Include activities which demonstrate engineering proficiency and
competency like trouble-shooting, site problem solving, clarifying of
design uncertainties, proposing of better alternative designs,
reviewing parameters and improving work procedures and practice
and work sequencing

MECHANICAL Drawings and calculations for the design of an item of work related to mechanical
engineering, such as machinery or machine parts; power-house or machine-shop
equipment; factory or workshop layouts; earth moving and quarry plant, compressed
air equipment, diesel traction units, pumps, engines, air conditioning systems, fire
fighting systems, other building services, etc. and
Notes or records on methods of machinery: accuracy, workmanship, tolerances;
testing properties of materials; performance of tests on plant and machines;
workshop organisation; maintenance; work study, etc.

CHEMICAL Drawings and calculations for the design, in whole or in part, of an item of work
relating to chemical or process engineering, e.g. heat exchangers; absorption towers;
distillation plant; liquor filters; plant layouts; and
Notes or records such as the operation and/or testing of chemical plant and items of
equipment; the preparation of process flow sheets showing heat and mass balances;
maintenance and planning coordination; the economic assessment of alternative
schemes; the instrumentation and automatic engineering techniques.

DISCIPLINE AND BRANCHES (NOT EXHAUSTIVE)

CIVIL Drawings, calculations and quantities to show adequate knowledge of the practical
application of the theory of civil engineering design in relation to highway
engineering e.g. the design of bridges, retaining wall, earthworks, paving and
drainage. and
Notes or records on highway capacity standards in relation to estimated traffic
volumes with particular reference to junction layout; highway materials and pavement
design; road location in urban or rural areas.

ELECTRICAL Drawings, charts, calculations for the design, installation, construction and operation
ELECTRONICS in whole or in part of a system or an item of work related to electrical engineering, for
example, utilization of electric plant and equipment such as generating plant,
switchgear, transformers, substations, transmission and distribution, electric drive,
lighting systems; and
Notes or records on operation, maintenance, testing of electrical plant and equipment
or telecommunication equipment; generation, transmission and distribution of power;
application of electricity to transport, industry, radio broadcasting, commercial and
domestic premises, etc

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT (CPD) PROGRAMMES
❑ BEM under Section 4(1)(ec) of the Act will enforce “continuing professional
development programmes” for a Professional Engineer, Professional Engineer with
Practising Certificate and Inspector of Works.
❑ The annual CPD Hours required to be obtained by a Professional Engineers with
Practicing Certificate (PEPC) shall be 50 CPD Hours.
❑ The annual CPD Hours required to be obtained by a Professional Engineers (PE)
shall be 25 CPD Hours.
