~.0 INTRODUCTION
This document presents the design philosophy and procedure
for the British Gas Armada Project integrated deck NW/NE lift
points. Both the lift points are of opposite hand and shall
be designed for the largest loaded lift force of the two.

The design conditions to be considered and lift point

envelope ie member sizes and angles are as defined by Amec
Engineering. The lift point detail will be defined by River
Don castings Limited to comply with the specified structural
requirements.

2.0 REFERENCES

The latest editions/revision of the following documents will

be used in the design of the castings:

3.0 CONFIGURATION/GEOMETRY

The cast lift point member geometry and angles are as

specified by Amec Engineering. The casting members will be
sized, by the addition of allowances for foundry processing
and manufacture, to be finished to comply with this geometry
and specified weld preps. Material thicknesses within the
body of the casting will be determined to satisfy both
structural and foundry requirements for the production of a
sound casting.

4.0 DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

The casting design will be verified by a combination of hand

calculations of critical sections and finite element (FE)
analysis.

PAGE NO. 3

004
4.1 Basic Loadcases:-

The lift points shall be designed for the following

cases

Case No. Description

LCJF Lift Case Padear 1 or 2 (45/55 +5% inward)

LCJG Lift Case Padear 1 or 2 (55/45 +5% inward)
LCJH Lift case Padear 1 or 2 (45/55 +5% outward)
LCJJ Lift case Padear 1 or 2 (55/45 +5% outward)
4.2 Additional Forces

The supplied loading contains all the additional forces

necessary.

4.3 Load Factors

The supplied loading contains all necessary factors for

the castings design and no further factors shall be
included in the analysis.

5.0 MATERIAL PROPERTIES:-

The following material properties shall be assumed:-

Modulus of Elasticity = 210 KN/rnrn2

Poissons Ratio = 0.3
Yield Strength (Fy) = 390 MPa

6.0 DESIGN CRITERIA

The castings shall be designed to satisfy the following

criteria.

Design Load Cases - Allowable stresses shall be in accordance

with reference 1).

The allowable stresses will be as follows:

a) Maximum local peak stress should not exceed 1.1 Fy

b) Local peak stress area should be less than 10% of the

section under consideration

c) The maximum allowable combined stress is 0.85 Fy

PAGE NO. 4
s

NB: For the FE analysis the governing design stress will be

the Von Mises equivalent stress.

NB: Localised hot spot surface overstressing, possibly in

excess of yield, may be considered acceptable provided
that it is of limited volume and that there is adequate
reserve against plastic failure of the section. Each
such case will be considered in terms of the structural
integrity of the component.

7.0 ANALYSIS PROCEDURE

The castings shall be analysed by means of hand calculations

and a finite element analysis as discussed in QCI c 011
(Appendix E) .

Finite element analysis shall be carried out as described in

D-1018 (Appendix E sub-appendix E) .

8.0 FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

The lift point design shall be verified be means of an FE

analysis of the most highly loaded point of the two (NW, NE)
as follows:

8.1 Casting Mesh

This will be modelled in 20 noded solids with a minimum

of 2 elements through thickness in all areas of
interest. A minimum number of 15 noded wedges will be
used for mesh transition in areas away from regions of
expected high stress. All major external and internal
radii will be modelled. All external radii less than
lOOmm will be approximated by wedges of equivalent
volume. All other radii will not be modelled.

8.2 Fabrication Mesh

All members will be extended in 20 noded solids to a

distance of 3 times their depth from the casting weld
planes at which point all nodes at the free ends will
be connected to master modes by a network of rigid
beams.

8.3 Loading and Boundary Conditions

1) The applied loading will be in equilibrium and

suitable boundary conditions will be chosen. This
will either be a minimum constraint to prevent

PAGE NO. 5

006
6

rigid·body motion or by fixing the column member

at its extremity. If the column is fixed the
reactions will be checked against the column
loading and if minimum constraint is used the
reactions will be shown to be negligible.

2) Member loads will be applied to the master nodes

at the ends of the member extensions.

3) The trunnion loads which are applied to the

casting will be assumed to be suitable radial
loads over an assumed arc of contact between the
sling and casting of 180°.

8.4 Programme Used

1) Pre and post processing will be carried out using

FAM.

2) The analysis will be carried out using ABAQUS.

8.5 Results

1) The results of the analysis will be presented as

black and white contour plots of Von Mises
stresses.

2) Plots of displaced shapes will be incorporated as

required.

3) Additional summary colour plots shall also be

provided.

9.0 CONTROL OF THE DESIGN PROCESS

Introduction

This Geometry Specification has been produced to describe the geometry used to
create the Finite Element model of the ROC Armada Project Top Side Lift Padear
(NW & NE). The Specification document will be appended to the final report,
Tickford Consultancy Limited (TCL) report number: TCUFEN94/013b. The
Geometry Specification has been created using ROC drawing 702:055-1 Rev C
and a history of the revisions of this Specification document are as follows;

i) Draft Version Rev 1.0 - 3 April 1995

Initial release of the document using ROC Drg 702:055-1 Rev C with the
following changes: Dimension 200mm (knee height) on Section A-A
modelled as 290mm; Dimple dimensions as specified here - not as per drg.

Geometry

The geometry is described by reproducing 3 key views from the ROC drawing:
these are the vertical section A-A; the front view; and the plan view. Figures A 1 - A4
show section A-A, Figures AS - AS show the front view, and Figures A9 - A 11
show the plan view.

The X, Y and Z coordinates of the key points added to the key sections are
provided in the Tables section. All points are given in the global coordinate system.

6.0 DESIGN LOADING

Loadcases

The padears are to be analysed for 4 loadcases ie LCJF, LCJG,

LCJH and LCJJ. These cases represent a sling force at 63.21°
with various combinations of 55/45 load splits and 5% lateral
forces. The loading consists of trunnion forces and member
forces.

Trunnion Forces

These are given on elements 100 and 200 in the following

printout. The forces on element 100 represent the main lift
force with a moment due to an assumed 55/45 loadsplit between
the 2 legs of the sling. The lift forces is to be applied as
a series of uniform radial pressures over an assumed arc of
contact between the sling and trunnion of 180° giving the
correct magnitude and direction of force. The 55/45 moment
is a surface traction acting over the same arc of contact.
The forces on element 200 represent the 2 5% lateral forces
which are assumed to have an effective line of action which
passes through the vertical centreline at 650mrn below TOS as
shown on the following figure.

I.
These forces are applied by the sling and where possible
should be applied as pressures to the trunnion. In any case
the loading method used should not cause significant local
stresses to the trunnion.

Member Forces

These are given on the following printout.

NB: For members 923 and 925 the forces are given at 650mm
below TOS.

1.0 SUMMARY

This document describes the general procedure followed by ROC

to derive, from the customer supplied data, the necessary
design loadcases suitable for hand calculations or FE
analysis.

2.0 CUSTOMER SUPPLIED DATA

The basic supplied data should reflect as accurately as

possible the casting geometry to minimise the number of
approximations which need to be made in this procedure.

The following points are guidelines to the type and format of

loading required.

1) A minimum number of governing load cases should be

identified for casting design.

1'I 2) The supplied loadcases should be in equilibrium and care

should be taken to ensure that all relevant types of
forces have been supplied ie including nodal masses,
deck plate loads etc.
J

J ) Loadcases may be ~~pplied as 'stick diagrams' or as

computer output. Where computer output is supplied the
member force sign conventions should be provided.

4) Member local axes systems should be clearly defined and

where possible the relationship between these axes and
the structure global axis system should be provided in
the form of direction cosines.

5) The loading should be provided at the joint, work

point·( s) Qr member ends· for the particular ncde. Loads·
may also be supplied at distances from the node but this
should be in addition to the work point or member end
forces.

6) Frame details should be provided to clearly identify the

geometry of the node used in the analysis.

7) The data should clearly identify the load factors which

are included and the necessary factors which are not.

8) The data should clearly identify whether any additional

loads need to be included eg installation forces for
lift points etc.

J.O ROC PROCEDURE

The following procedure is followed to produce the design

loadcases using ROC computer programmes FRAMED and FRAMES.

PAGE NO. J

-_})
015
1) A frame. model is constructed for each node configuration
to be analysed. Where one analysis is used to cover
handed veisions a model is constructed for each version
(see point number 7). The model will conform to the
geometry used in the supplied data.

2) The supplied loading will be applied to the model(s) and

checked for equilibrium (this not only confirms if the
loading is in equilibrium but that there is a correct
understanding of the data). Any out of balances will be
referred to the client and any necessary agreed
adjustments to the loading will be made (see point
number 5). ·

J) Where necessary the frame model(s) will be modified to

reflect the geometry of the cast node(s). An
equilibrium check will be carried out and any out of
balances induced by changing the geometry will be
distributed in the members framing into the node (see
point number 5) .

4) Any additional forces to be included eg installation

forces will be calculated and added to the model. Out
of balances induced by this·will be distributed in the
members framing int~ the node ( se·e point number 5) .

5) Distribution of out of balance forces - this may apply

to out of balances generated in stages 2), J) or 4).
Forces will be distributed either by making assumptions
regarding which members will restrain them or by· means
of a frame analysis. Such an analysis will involve
modelling the members to the next frame joints and then
restraining them in a suitable manner eg by fully fixing
or pinning the nodes. The out of balance forces will
then be applied to the node to obtain the distribution.
Th~ distributed forces will then be added t6 the basic
forces and the node checked for equilibrium.

)._' 6) The loading will be multiplied by any necessary factors.

NB: For preliminary design data it may be advisable to

include a 10% - 15% contingency factor, though not
to member end thicknesses.

7) Where several models have been made for the analysis of

one node configuration and where one model is being used
in an FE analysis the forces will be copied onto this
model and will be mirrored appropriately. ·

8) Where necessary the forces will be 'backed off' from the

joint or ~ork point to the model extremities. If this
is for an FE analysis then the model extremities will
generally be J depths or diameters from the
casting/fabrication weld planes.
PAGE NO. 4

.D
016
9) Where an FE analysis is to be carried out it is not
general policy to model deck plating therefore any
·, . specified deck plate loading will be added to the
structure member loads. The effect of this will be
considered when the analysis results are reviewed.

The above is a general description which may not account for the
specific requirements of a particular node design. For each
analysis the customer supplied data and requirements will be
reviewed to determine the specific procedure to be followed. this
may involve modifying or changing the order of the operations. for
each node design the loading derivation procedure will be
documented and included as an appendix in the design report .

DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL.STEEL CASTINGS

PROCEDORE FOR THE DETAIL DESIGN VERIFICATION PROCESS
(see Appendix A for an overall activity check list)

l The detailed design process commences with the following inputs

from either the customer direct or from the Commercial
Department:-

i) A concept drawing from either River Don Castings or a

customer (No. and date to be noted in the Contract File).

i i ) A design specification from the customer (No. and date to

be noted in the,Contract File).

iii) Load data (which is assumed to be checked and considered

sufficiently accurate and sufficiently balanced) from the
customer. (Reference No. and date to be noted in the
Con tract File).

2 A contract file is opened to contain the above input and all

engineering correspondence.

3 The Design Manager and Structural Engineer/s for the contract are
responsible for reviewing all the above when preparing a
detailed drawing/design. They are also responsible for
clarifying and resolving any inconsistencies which arise,
particularly with respect to load data or specific drawing
requirements. Also previous design experience is of
considerable importance when preparing the detailed design
(particularly previous FE results and loading relative to the
load data which applies to the new design).

4 In some cases a design brief may be considered appropriate for

submission to the customer, or in other cases similar previous
design reports will be reviewed and their format adopted.

5 A plan of the detailed design process is prepared and key dates

(for input and output data) are highlighted.

6 Whilst detailed drawings are being commenced, hand calculations

may be undertaken to check the critical sections of the
component. Input from latest design codes and text books will
be used where appropriate.

7 Preliminary drawings are checked (see appendix Cl and submitted

to the customer for comment.

8 In certain cases, FE analysis wiLl be requi=ed as .a check, on the

design process and the procedure for this is covered in Appendix
8 (Appendix E provides more general information concerning FE L3
analysis procedures). Existing contracts are in place with
approved sub-contractors and the commencement of work is
initiated by a simple letter or fax.

9 Hand calculations are checked, and if any revisions to the

drawing are shown to be required these are made.

10 Any revisions which are shown to be necessary by the FE analysis

are also incorporated .

•11 A full design report i,s prepared i ncorpo rating the FE report
Gwhere appropriate) and the proposed detail drawing. The
report/calculations are checked (see Appendix 0) and issued to
the Customer/CA for comment, and following the incorporation of
any revisions, it is issued as a final repoct for approval.

12 The drawing is also finalised and issued foe manufacture,

following the incorporation of customer comments (see also
Procedure QCI C 001 relating to drawings and their issue). This
drawing is stamped as approved for manufacture and signed by the
Design Department Manager/Senior Structural Engineer and also
the .Operati'ons Manager.

PROCEDURE FOR FEA

1 A drawing is sent to the consultant together with

any special request for a particular type of model,
the expected loading/restraint method, approximate
model density, symmetry and expected areas of high
stress etc where appropriat~. Often such drawings are
still preliminary, and are subject to design
refinement and minor changes by ROC or their customer.
The design process is iterative and often includes
Knowledge gained from the process of constructing an
FE model.

2 During preparation of the FE model there is constant ROC & FEA

feedback to ROC and clarification etc.

3 The consultant produces a modelling method and ROC CHECK

suggested mesh density and submits to ROC.

4 ~celiminary model plots are submitted to Roc·.· ROC CHECK

5 ROC submit these plots to their customer if CUSTOMER

appropriate. REVIEW

6 If the ROC drawing has not already been submitted to CUSTOMER

the customer, then at this stage the submission is REVIEW
made.

7 The consultant undertakes his own dimensional check FEA CHECK

on the model and checks are also done by ROC.

8 From data supplied by the customer, ROC prepare load ROC CHECK
data and submit to the consultant together with a CUSTOMER
definition of boundary conditions and worst load REVIEW
cases. ROC also submit this to their customer for a
rev1ew.

9 Consultant checks the loading, applies it to the FEA CHECK

model and to obtain a balance does a reaction checK.

10 Analysis is on HOLD if any problems are found,

whereupo~ a report is made to ROC.

ll Otherwise the computer run is made and a preliminary

report (in the form of faxed stress plots) is made
to ROC, concentrating usually on the high stress
areas.

12 When all plots are available, ROC do a full check ROC CHECK
for the highest stressed areas.

)
026
. 2 .

13 Consultant prepares a final report. FEA CHECK

14 ROC checks the report, and adds it to its own full ROC CHECK
design report with a suitable commentary.

15 Report is submitted to customer for its own review.- CUSTOMER

REVIEW

16 If required, checks of the software QA (ie for mesh

generation, post processing and programming checks)
can be made available to customer for review_ The
appropriate versions of the programmes used will be
validated in accordance with the consultants test
procedure (ref Appendix 0).

17 The FE consultant will be subjected to a periodic QA

1.0 SUMMARY

This document details the input to, and expected output from,
subcontracted finite element (FE) analysis work. The input
will be provided by River Don Castings and the output will be 1n
the form of a report provided by the FE consultant at the
completion of the analysis.

2. 0 DATA INPUT

The following data will be provided to the FE consultant.

2.1 Drawing

ROC will provide a drawing, typically orthogonal views

and sections, to describe the cast item. This forms the
bas is of the FE model .and should be con formed to in all
respects unless otherwise agreed by ROC. Typical areas
of non-conformance are the non-modelling of small radii
(less than SOmml and the approximation, by volume, of
radi is be twef-n SOmrn and .10 Omrn. However as fatigue is
very often an important consideration such
approximations shoqld not be made without approval.
Details of non-co_nformance should be provided· in the
suppliers geometry ~pecification, see 3.1.

In areas where the drawing may not be fully explicit or

where a development between specified sections is
required guidance or clarification of proposed methods
should be obtained from ROC.

Where geometrical synunet-c:y exists .this may be utilised

by constructing only the symmetrical part of the
casting. Loading may then be_.reduced to symrnetr ical and
asymmetrical components and run with the appropriate
boundary conditions. The use of symmetry in this manner
is entirely at the discretion of the analyst. However,
if symmetry is used it is preferable, for clarity, to
mirror the model accordingly at the post processing stage
and present the results on the full model ie 'left hand
side' results on the left hand side etc.

The axis system used for the model should be agreed with
ROC.

The type of elements to be used will probably be self

determining by the casting geometry and analysis
objectives. Generally they will be specified by ROC
though occasionally the consultants' expertise and
knowledge may be sought in making this decision.

Usually it will be necessary to model parts of the

fabricated steel work into which the casting is welded.
The lengths of these "extension" is typically 3 times
the member depth or diameter and their function 1s one
oE load transfer into the casting.

2.2 Loadinq and Constraint

ROC will provide loading data for the analysis. This

will, in general, be balanced loading for each specified
load case. The loading will be in the Eorm of computer
output with necessary explanatory loading diagrams. The
loading will be supplied in both local member axis
systems and the FE model global axis system. Where it is
considered advantageous the data may be supplied on 3.5»
or 5.25" floppy disk in an ASCII format.
----,
i
The general method of load application will be specified
by ROC eg for contact pressures between sling cables and
' trunnions or pins and shear plates a supposed pressure
distribution and. arc ·of contact wil·l be specified. The
specific applic'ation of these loads ,,.,ill be the
responsibility of ~he consultant.
·..
As the loading is usually balanced boundary conditions
may be left to the discretion of the consultant.
However in certain cases specific constraints may be
requested by ROC eg in the case of non-balanced forces
where the load path is to be determined by the
constraints used. In all cases approval of the
constraints to be used should be obtained Erom ROC.

Allowable stress levels wili oe· provided Ear the review

oE FE results.

2.3 Material Properties

Standard properties for the cast steel will be specified

by ROC.

3.0 REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

3 documents shall be required during the progress of an

analysis, these are in chronological order:

3.1 Geometry Soe~ification

This document should provide a description of the

geometry and proposed meshing of the casting. This
should include element types used (and in which region
of the model where more than one ·type is used·), any
approximations made to or interpretation made from the
supplied drawing.

Key sections should be provided (eg those shown on the

relevant ROC drawing) with co-ordinates of nodes or key
points on these sections. This document will be used by
ROC to carry out dimensional checks on the model and
should therefore be provided as quickly as possible.

3.2 Loading and Constraints Specification

This document should provide a description of the method

of loading application and boundary conditions to be
used for the analysis.

A printout of the applied loading is required along with

any appropriate load resultants eg the resultant loads
applied to a trunnion which will be composed of a number
of pressure and nodal loads.

J. J fE Report

It is expected that the final report should consist of

the following sections:.

l Surmnary
2 Introduction
3 Hodel details ··and constraints
4 Loading
5 Results

For sections 3 and 4 reference may be made to the

geometry and loading specification for brevity 1n which
case these should be included as appendices to the
report.

Section 5 should con!;iist of a surrnnary of the .. peak_.stress

areas and any areas in which the allowable stresses are
exceeded. The analyst is expected to scan the entire
model and show sufficient plots to prove that the has
done this. The summary plots should be readily
understa~dable by non fE analysis specialists.

A table of reactions should be provided to establish

that equilibrium .loading was applied to the model.

The bulk of the report shall consist of the figures ie

mesh plots and stress results, all of which shall be
clearly numbered and labelled for identification where
necessary.

3. 3. l Mesh Plots
Sufficient overall and sectioned views shall be
provided of the model to illustrate its
construction. Member extension should be
omitted from the majority of these views for
clarity.

J. J. 2 Stress Plots

A sufficient number of stress plots should be

provided to give an understanding of the bulk
stresses obtained in the casting for each load
case. Summary plots should be provided for each
load case anotated with the peak stress values.
Areas of peak stress and those in excess of
allowable will need to be illustrated with
additional.plots.of the local areas in question.
These should be clear views of the surface to
give an indication of the area of overstress and
sections through the peak stress to give an
indication of its depth.

(Graphs of stress decay through the thickness

may occasionally be requested).

These plots should be black and white Von Mises

contour stresses with the contour values chosen
to give a clear indication of the rate of change
of s~ress levels.

In certai~: cases other stress types may be

required; . Examples of these are:

i) Cast I beams, tubulars, boxes etc where

cartesian or principal stresses may be
required.

ii) Load cases which are specifically designed

to assess fatigue where principal
$tresses will be required.

These additional reporting requirements--for--·

stress types will be identified for each
analysis undertaken.

NB: All stress plots should show the FE model

axis system and a key indicating the stress
levels for each contour.

Displaced shape plots may also on occasions be

requested.

3.4 ?roqress Reoorting

Plots of the model mesh and of the stress results should

be provided for review as soon as they are available and
prior to the full report being issued.
