TO RAISING THE VILLAGE

RE: POST FIELD REPORT IN KIBIRA CLUSTER KYEENJOJO DISTRICT.

BACKGROUND; During post construction inspection our staff officers in the clusters of
Kibira and Matete reported funny sound, smelly water and discolored water in some water
sources.

ACTION TAKEN: All the water sources in the question were visited and assessed
including even others that we constructed for fact finding.

FACTS DISCOVERED:

1. After construction the cluster officer for Kibira cluster instructed the site foreman
to close most of the water sources for almost 2 months because the communities had
not complied in their obligations. This resulted in stagnation of water for long thus
resulting into a faint smell which has persisted in 3 water sources namely Ka-
Katuramu, Ka-Moses and Ka-Josephat in Katunguru.
2. Water runoff from uphill flowed directly to the water sources due to lack of
drainage channels after some time and since the water sources were not being used
it was not easily detected hence change of water color for the named sources in
Katunguru valley.
3. All sources with funny sound had enlarged pump buckets thus causing folding of the
chain forcing it to knock on the cover plate as they pumped water producing a
funny sound.
4. Some person from Bihehe in Nyabuharwa S/c disguising as a borehole technician
had opened Ka-Sunday water source and powered oil in the cylinder that he wanted
it to be light as people pumped. This was very risk as oil is dangerous once
consumed by human beings in drinking water.
5. Some community members refused water sources in some points which were sited
hence forcing changes but with a lot of difficulty in the new areas such as Ka-
Josephat in Katunguru.
6. Ka-Yeremia source is located in Kyente and not in Katunguru as alleged by one of
the email which you sent to me and it has no problem the community confessed.
7. Some water changed color after boiling and suspected to be high iron content.

SOLUTIONS TO THE ABOVE CHALLENGES:

1. Re-opening and flushing out all dirty water in the water sources in Katunguru
namely Ka-Katuramu,Ka-Moses and Ka-Josephat. The same will be done in Ka-
Ahebwa in Kyente. This will commence on Tuesday 9/7/2024 and reconstruction of
aprons will also be done.
2. Replacement of Pump buckets in all sources that had funny sound has already been
done in all sources which had funny sound in Matete and Kibira clusters.
3. Flushing and washing out oil in Ka-Sunday water source has been done and
community and cluster office notified never to allow un trained people on the
source.
4. After flushing out dirty water in Katunguru the community members will be
sensitized on maintenance of proper drainage and planting of green cover grass
around the sources.
