Introduction

I am writing to express my keen interest in pursuing a graduate degree in Development

Economics at Duke University. I have a Bachelor's degree in Development Economics from
LUANAR and substantial experience in both the private and public sectors, I am eager to further
my academic and professional journey in this field. My motivation stems from a strong desire to
contribute to the socio-economic development of Malawi and other developing nations
through rigorous economic research and effective policy-making.

Academic Background
My undergraduate education provided me with a solid foundation in economic theory,
quantitative methods, and statistical analysis. Courses such as Applied Econometrics,
Quantitative Methods for Economics, and Macro & Micro Economics were particularly
influential in shaping my analytical skills and research capabilities. Achieving high grades in
these courses, including consistent A+ performances, underscores my dedication and aptitude
for the field.

Professional Experience
My work experience has been diverse and enriching. As a Project Officer at BUUUNDLE MW, I
have honed my skills in project management, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement. My
role involved developing and implementing monitoring and evaluation (M&E) frameworks to
ensure project efficacy and alignment with organizational goals.

During my internship as an M&E Officer at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, I assisted in
designing and implementing M&E systems for various trade and industry projects. This
experience enhanced my understanding of governmental processes and the critical role of M&E
in policy formulation and evaluation. Furthermore, my tenure at MANEPO as a Project Officer
deepened my project management skills and provided insights into the challenges faced by
non-profit organizations in driving socio-economic development.

Motivation for Graduate Studies

My experiences have illuminated the significant impact that well-informed economic policies
can have on development outcomes. However, they have also highlighted the complexities and
challenges inherent in this process. Pursuing a graduate degree will equip me with advanced
theoretical knowledge and empirical research skills necessary to tackle these challenges
effectively. I am particularly interested in exploring topics such as poverty alleviation,
sustainable development, and the role of innovation in economic growth.

Career Aims
Following the completion of my postgraduate studies, I plan to become a key player in Malawi’s
development field, and even beyond. My final goal is to be part of international organizations,
state agencies or research institutions where I can bring my expertise in to the design,
implementation and evaluation of policies that support inclusive and sustainable development.
Additionally, I want to engage in academic scholarship as well as imparting knowledge on future
economists.
Finally
To sum up, based on my educational background, professional experience and loyalty to
development economics; I am confident enough that I’m a suitable applicant for your graduate
program. In this regard, it is my belief that [University Name] with its challenging curriculum,
distinguished professors and cooperative environment will offer me an excellent channel
through which both my career goals and academic objectives could be accomplished. It will be a
great honor for me if you give me a chance to grow in your institution while at the same time
contribute positively towards its progress.
