Lesson Idea Name: What is Matter?

Grade Level/Content Area: Second Grade, Matter

Content Standard Addressed:

S2P1 What is Matter and How does it Change?

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: Use the What would you like students to know and be
link to guide you to suggested student standards able to do by the end of this lesson:
which come from the ISTE Student Standards
Website By the end of this lesson, students should know
what matter is and how it changes.
Empowered Learner 1.1a: Students articulate
and set personal learning goals, develop
strategies leveraging technology to achieve them
and reflect on the learning process itself to
improve learning outcomes.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

The student learning goals for this lesson to be understand the topic of Matter and to be able to
differentiate between what it and what isn’t matter. Students should also be able to differentiate
between the 3 stages of matter.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

X Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the

school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

In this lesson, students will navigate the Padlet as they learn about the topic of Matter while teacher
monitor their technology use to make sure it is appropriate and on task. I will keep students engaged
in this lesson through interactive simulations and hands-on activities that are embedded in the
lesson. I will access students’ prior knowledge through classroom discussion before commencing the
lesson. I will provide real world tasks embedded in the padlet to motivate my students. I will
conclude the lesson as it began, with a classroom discussion. This allows us to discuss what we have
learned and what we may still need help on.

Managing student learning:

Using Padlet for this lesson will cause a shift from passive to active social learners in students. The
interactive nature of Padlet encourages students to engage and collaborate with peers in
discussions, projects, and sharing resources. To allow for time-on-task and shift prom passive to
active learning, I will set time limits for activities, promote group work and collaborative
assignments, and allow discussion time.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The learning activities I have planned will support Engagement and Representation components of
UDL. This lesson provides multiple means of engagement because students are able to collaborate
with their students in real time. This lesson also provides multiple means of representation because
there are various formats displaying content in the Padlet, like hands-on activities/simulations and
videos. By supporting the UDL framework, Padlet ensures that students have the opportunity to
further their knowledge in diverse ways.
Reflective Practice:

After designing this lesson idea, I believe this tool will help students build an understanding in ways
they could not do with traditional tools because Padlet is a collaborative tool you can use with your
peers. I have also embedded interactive activities applicable to the real-world which promotes
further understanding and engagement. I am most looking forward to disproving common
misconceptions when it comes to Matter, like the misconception that air is not matter. I am most
looking forward to this misconception because a large majority of people believe in it, but it will be
disproven through the hands-on balloon activity included in the Padlet lesson.
