Using Citations and Reference in BUS 321

When writing “write-ups” for case studies, for discussion boards (for both original posts and responses
to classmates), and for reflections, please utilize proper citations to avoid any possibility of plagiarism
or inappropriate inclusion of the thoughts and words of others without attribution.

See below APA Style Bibliography for the Covey E Book and the Covey physical Book. Your book might
have a different publication date. As you write reflections or discussions, please include the citations for
the sources you use in your writing.

The attached URL link will also show you how to cite within the text with the author’s name and page
number in paraphrasing, etc.

EXAMPLE - In-Text Citations

When paraphrasing or referencing a key idea of an author:

Covey (2020) states….

When directly quoting:

(Covey, 2020, p.149)

Then include the Bibliography or Reference citations at the end of your reflections, discussions, and
case write-ups. APA style as it relates to readings and writings in Leadership scholarship is the preferred
style.

Example of Use of citations in Discussion threads

In which quadrant do you spend most of your time? How will you use what you have
learned from the 7 Habits book to spend more time in Quadrant 2?
This question has caused a lot of self-reflection over the past couple of days. I feel that currently,
I am spending too much time in Quadrant 1. Covey (2004) describes how matters in this
category are easily recognizable. They are both urgent and important and need to be dealt with
immediately. I loved how he describes that being in this quadrant is like being in the pounding
surf. (Covey, 2004). He also warns, "As long as you focus on Quadrant 1, it keeps getting bigger
and bigger until it dominates you." (Covey, 2004, p.152)
I think I have been reminded from the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People that I need to
prioritize my life. I need to "put first things first" so to speak. I definitely recognize the need to
spend more time in Quadrant 2 since "Quadrant 2 is the heart of effective personal management."
(Covey, 2004, p.153). Delegating and setting goals that help me prioritize the important matters
in my life and help me achieve and maintain a P/PC balance (Covey, 2004) are also important
lessons I have learned that will help me spend more time in Quadrant 2.

Example of Response to the original post.

Excellent post Jacqueline! I too have been short-sighted in so many instances! I'm working on
that. I love that Covey said that "Begin with the end in mind" is based on the principle that things
are created twice. There's a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation to all
things." (Covey, 2014, p.99). He gives the example of building a home, where first you need to
make blueprints and make sure it is well-thought-out before starting construction. (Covey, 2014).
This analogy made so much sense to me and I can see the wisdom of having a personal mission
statement along with aligned goals. It seems that these need to be in place to have a clear vision
or direction for our day-to-day lives.

Change, (p. 99). New York: Free Press USA.

Further Example
With your example of the wedding business that you dealt with, I think the business needs to
hear what Covey had to say about beginning with the end in mind. He said "The most effective
way I know to begin with the end in mind is to develop a personal mission statement or
philosophy or creed." (Covey, 2004, p.106). In this case, it makes sense and would be profitable
for the business to have a corporate mission statement. As you mentioned one of their main goals
should be to please customers. I think if they review what they truly want to achieve as a
business and align their priorities correctly, then they will have satisfied customers in the future
and their business will grow. Congratulations by the way!
