TOPIC OF THE PROJECT – “Consumer Awareness
b. Consumer exploitation
Consumer exploitation is a situation in which a consumer is
cheated or given false information by the producer. Large
companies with huge wealth, power and reach can
manipulate the market in various ways. At times they pass
on false information through the media, and other sources
to attract consumers
c. Consumer rights
Consumers have certain rights that are essential for their
protection and empowerment. The key consumer rights
include the right to safety, where consumers are
safeguarded from hazardous products; the right to
information, ensuring businesses provide accurate details;
and the right to choice, allowing access to a variety of
quality goods and services. Additionally, consumers have
the rights to be heard, seek redressal, and receive
consumer education, enabling them to make informed
decisions and voice their concerns effectively. These rights
are upheld through consumer protection laws and
regulations
d. World Consumers Rights Day-15th March
World Consumer Rights Day is observed annually on
March 15 to raise global awareness about consumer
rights and needs.1The day is marked as an opportunity to
demand that the rights of all consumers are respected
and protected, and to protest against market abuses and
social injustices that undermine those rights.1The theme
for World Consumer Rights Day 2024 is 'Fair and
responsible AI for Consumers', which highlights concerns
regarding misinformation, privacy violations, and
discriminatory practices perpetuated by AI-driven
platforms.14 This theme underscores the importance of
ensuring that AI technologies respect and uphold
consumer rights in the digital age. The consumer
movement creates events and campaigns to educate
people about their fundamental consumer rights, which
include the right to safety, the right to be informed, the
right to choose, the right to be heard, the right to seek
redressal, and the right to consumer education.
Responsibility of consumers
While consumers have certain rights that are protected by
law, they also have corresponding responsibilities to
exercise those rights effectively. Some of the key
responsibilities of consumers include:
• Reading and following product labels, instructions, and
safety guidelines carefully.3
• Investigating the quality and safety standards of
products before making a purchase.3
• Responding promptly to product recalls.3
• Recognizing and avoiding deceptive or unfair selling
practices.3
• Practicing comparison shopping to make informed
choices.3
• Being honest and transparent in their dealings with
sellers.3
• Voicing their concerns and complaints about
unsatisfactory products or services.3
• Reporting unsafe, illegal, or unethical business
practices to the relevant authorities.3
• Seeking out accurate information about products and
services before making purchasing decisions.3
Consumer awareness
Consumer Awareness
Consumer Awareness is the level of knowledge and
understanding that individuals have about their rights,
responsibilities, and the information needed to make
informed purchasing decisions.1234Empowering consumers
through education is crucial, as it allows them to make
informed decisions when purchasing products and
services.5
The key aspects of consumer awareness include:

Consumer movement
The consumer movement emerged as a “social force” in India to
protect and advance consumer interests in the face of unethical
and unfair trade practices. As a result of these efforts, the Indian
government enforced the Consumer Protection Act of 1986, also
known as CORPA.
The Consumer Movement in India
f. The consumer movement in India has a long history, with roots
dating back to the Vedic period.7During the Indian
independence movement, leaders like Gandhi protested against
the taxation of basic consumer goods and encouraged self-
sufficiency through initiatives like the Khadi movement.7After
independence, the Indian government recognized the
importance of consumer protection and established the Indian
Association of Consumers in 1956.7However, this organization
was not effective in achieving its goals.7In the 1960s, the
consumer movement gained momentum with the founding of
organizations like the Consumer Guidance Society of India
(CGSI) and the Consumer Education and Research Centre
(CERC).7
