Chapter 3 Assignment
Professor Warring

1. The importance of different types of rewards do change over time as one

progresses through their career. Not only does the importance of different

rewards change through different careers but also through different generations

in those careers. For example, traditionalists would prefer to have their work title

changed to something that resembles a higher status. Baby boomers just want to

be treated the same across the board and would prefer something like more paid

time off for a better work-life balance. Generation X would prefer not to be

micromanaged and would like more flexibility with their position (like how to reach

their deadlines or goals). Generation Y is a little different, they just prefer to feel

like they are good at their jobs and seek coaching/skill growth. Lastly, generation

Z, would like to find ways to improve the world and rewards of extra money and

bonuses.

2. If I had an employee who is absolutely capable of excelling at their job but is

underperforming, I would take a couple courses of action. I would start by having

a conversation with the employee about if they feel the reason they are

underperforming is due to motivation or engagement as well as rewards, whether

they be intrinsic or extrinsic. We would also discuss how to improve not just

bashing them for performing poorly. I would also initiate a performance plan with

the employee including but not limited to smaller more frequent goals with

rewards at each goal and a bigger reward at the end.

3. Motivating an employee who already performs above and beyond can be tricky. I

would make sure to have regular meetings with this employee to ensure that their

motivation/engagement needs haven’t changed, I would consistently provide

words of encouragement and praise. Along with that, showing gratitude and

appreciation for their hard work by meeting all their intrinsic and extrinsic reward

needs.

4. The generation that resonates best with me, based on the textbook, would be a

true mix between generation Y and generation Z. I believe that I personally like to

have reinforcement and seek positive feedback but also I value structure and

routine. I also see positive interactions and seek to develop my skills which in

turn provides my personal fulfillment, but I also like when management can

produce a workspace that supports me and gives money rewards. The

generation that I feel would be most difficult to manage in today's professional

world would be traditionalist and baby boomers. Nowadays, companies are being

run by younger generations meaning they don’t understand the needs of the late-

stage employees. Although the mid to young stage employees do believe in

providing recognition and work-life balance, they also believe in being more

hands-off with their jobs and goals.
