GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Call to Worship
One: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
All: And also with you.
One: This is the day that the Lord has made;
All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Prayer of Adoration
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires, known, and from
whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily
magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
*Hymn
Create in Me a Clean Heart
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
2
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with you free Spirit.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me. x2
Prayer of Confession
Gracious God, we understand that there are times we turn from you. We
may turn to our own understanding or we may feel a distance from you due
to our own worry, misgivings, or distrust. But we understand that you are
a God of love, mercy, and compassion – you understand our every need.
Please wash our hearts from all that may yield separation from you. Assist
us in reaching to you so that we may be filled with your light and love.
Support us in residing in your compassion and grace.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Psalm 24
The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; 2
for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers. 3 Who shall
ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? 4 Those who
have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false,
and do not swear deceitfully. 5 They will receive blessing from the Lord, and
vindication from the God of their salvation. 6 Such is the company of those who
3
seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah 7 Lift up your heads, O
gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in. 8
Who is the King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of
glory may come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the
King of glory. Selah
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, 1989)

Reading from the New Testament

Ephesians 1:3-14
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in
Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 just as he chose us
in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him
in love. 5 He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ,
according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace
that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption
through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of
his grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9 he has made
known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set
forth in Christ, 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him,
things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In Christ we have also obtained an
inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who
accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who
were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13
In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your
salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised
Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s
own people, to the praise of his glory.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version (National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, 1989)

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

Our God Reigns
How lovely on the mountains
are the feet of him
who brings good news,
good news announcing peace,
proclaiming news of happiness:
Our God reigns! Our God reigns!
Our God reigns! Our God reigns!
Our God reigns! Our God reigns!
He had no stately form;
he had no majesty
that we should be drawn to him.
He was despised,
and we took no account of him;
yet now he reigns with the Most High!
Our God reigns! Our God reigns!
Our God reigns! Our God reigns
It was our sin and guilt
that bruised and wounded him,
it was our sin that brought him down.
When we like sheep had gone astray,
our shepherd came
and on his shoulders bore our shame!
Our God reigns! Our God reigns!
Our God reigns! Our God reigns

Reading from the Gospel
Matthew 11:25-30
At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because
you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed
them to infants; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things
have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except
the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom
the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 “Come to me, all you that are weary and are
carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and
learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your
souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead,
and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the
dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen.

*Hymn
Spirit of the Living God
Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me.
Melt me, mold me,
fill me, use me,
Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me. x2

Prayer of Dedication
Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily
bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the Kingdom, and the
power and the glory, forever. AMEN!

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

*Hymn
Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace! how sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come.
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me;
his word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.
When we've been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we've no less days to sing God's praise
than when we'd first begun.
Benediction
