Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests. Read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you want to show the exact lines or words uttered,

What is It

Punctuation Marks

Punctuation marks are symbols that are used to aid the clarity and
comprehension of written language.

Some common punctuation marks are:


Period (.)
• indicates the end of a sentence
Example:
I water the plants every morning.
• follows an abbreviation
Examples:
Mr. (Mister)
Pres. (President)
no. (number)
atty. (attorney)
Comma (,)
• separates items in a list
Example:
My favorite colors are blue, green, white, and gray.
• uses after an introductory word or phrase, such as at the end of the day,
however, in contrast, etc.
Example:
However, he was determined to go back to school.
• in a tag question at the end of the sentence
Example:
You are going to submit your project tomorrow, aren’t you?
• directly addressing someone
Example:
Jemuel, what will you do after school?
• separates items in a series or lists
Example:
I bought two kilos of beef, three kilos of pork and five kilos of fish.
• separates phrases and clauses
Example:
If it doesn’t rain tomorrow, we will go for a picnic.
• separates spoken part of the text from the unspoken part
Example:
“I love doing this,” she exclaimed.
• when words or phrases are used in direct address
Example:
“Teacher, I’m sorry for being late.”
• after the words like Yes, No, Oh, Ah, etc.

Exclamation Point (!)
• expresses strong feeling like anger, happiness, excitement, joy, pain,
surprise and others
Examples:
Leave me alone!
I’m so happy to see you!
I can’t wait to go to Paris!
What a victory!
• shows strong imperative sentence
Example:
Keep quiet!
Quotation Marks (“ “)
• reproduces the words of a speaker as said originally
Example:
“You’ll never believe what happened last night,” Josh said.
• encloses words of special significance for the writer.
Example:
In his article “Taking Care of the Cats” Rose gives her readers
some pieces of advice.
• used to set off an alias or nicknames
Example:
Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr.
Question Mark (?)
• shows that a direct question has been asked
Example:
How old are you?
“What do you think I should cook for tonight?” asked Mika.
Colon (:)
• indicates that there is a list
Example:
We need four main types of food: cereals, leafy vegetables,
fruits, and fish.
Apostrophe (‘)
• uses for contractions in place of omitted letters
Example:
he is = he’s
I am = I’m
do not = don’t
they have = they’ve
it is = it’s
I would = I’d
let us = let’s
she has = she’s
who is = who’s
are not = aren’t

Hyphen (-)
• creates compound words
Examples:
He is a very self-confident person.
Susan decided to work part-time this summer.
Note: There is no clear rule or guideline to help us to decide which words
are hyphenated and which can be used as a single word.

Learn commonly misspelled words


Some words are so tough to spell that even native speakers get them wrong a lot.
You can find some commonly misspelled English words in the dictionary. Many
commonly misspelled words are not words you need to use too often.

Here are some commonly misspelled words you might need to know how to spell:
