I. Dựa vào từ loại của từ mới đó
1. Danh từ
a. Dấu hiệu nhận biết
-tion: industrialization, globalization
-ment: experiment, investment
-er: teacher, cutter
-or: inventor, tutor
-ist: scientist, archaeologist
-ship: friendship, relationship
-ism: socialism, buddhism
-ity: nationality, ability
-ness: tiredness, kindness
-ian: musician
b. Vị trí trong câu
- Làm chủ ngữ trong câu
- Danh từ thường đứng sau: tính từ, mạo từ, tính từ sở hữu, từ chỉ số lượng, this, that,
these, those, enough,…
2. Động từ

Có 3 loại chính:

- Tobe: am/is/are/was/were/been/be
- Model verb: will/can/may/should/would/could/might/must
- Động từ thường: go, run, breathe, study, learn,… (từ có đuôi “ize” or “ise”)
3. Tính từ
a. Dấu hiệu nhận biết
-ful: colorful
-less: colorless
-al: national
-ive: active
-ble: understandable
-ous: famous
-ic: scientific
-ish: childish
 b. Vị trí trong câu
- Thường đứng trước danh từ
- Sau linking verb: tobe, seem, appear, feel, taste, look, keep, get,…
4. Trạng từ
- Được hình thành bằng cách thêm “ly” vào sau tính từ
- Bổ nghĩa cho động từ
 Lưu ý: phân biệt giữa tính từ đuôi “ly” và trạng từ
 danh từ + “ly”  tính từ
 tính từ + “ly”  trạng từ
II. Dựa vào 5 gợi ý đặc biệt có từ câu chứa từ mới đó hoặc các câu xung quanh
1. Dấu câu: dấu phẩy, dấu ngoặc đơn, dấu gạch ngang

3. Cấu trúc tương phản

Cấu trúc này thông thường có 2 vế/2 câu có ý nghĩa trái ngược nhau.
Thường sẽ chứa các từ: however, yet, on the other hand, but, while, whereas, although, by

4. Cấu trúc tương đồng

Cấu trúc này thông thường có 2 vế/2 câu có ý nghĩa giống/tương đương nhau.
Thường sẽ chứa các từ: similarly, as well as, both, likewise, in other words, that is
Birds are oviparous; similarly, fish and reptiles lay eggs that hatch outside of the body.

Taking out the garbage was an onerous task; likewise, washing dishes can be a hard job.

5. Cấu trúc thể hiện ví dụ

Cấu trúc này sẽ bao gồm một số ví dụ đi theo giúp ta xác định nghĩa của từ mới.
Thường sẽ chứa các từ: such as, such, other, for example, for instance, like

Potentates such as kings, queens, and emperors are very powerful and wealthy people.

Canines, such as collies, pugs, and poodles, are good pets.
