Lube Oil System
 There are two centrifugal lube oil pumps. The main one is
driven by an MP steam turbine and the auxiliary by an electric
motor. The pumps takes suction from Lube Oil Console.
 The motor auto start, if the lube oil pressure drops below 1.4
kg/cm2 .
 Oil flows through one of two filters to remove particles down
to 25 microns in size.
 There are two control valves in the system.
 One to reduce the pressure to 6.0-7.0kg/cm2 for control oil
and one to reduce to 1.5 kg/cm2g for lubrication
Control Oil System

 The control oil at a pressure of 6.0-7.0 kg/cm2 serves

to control the turbine speed via a hydraulic governor
and keep open the stop/emergency trip value.
 Control oil flows through a micro filter to the centrifugal
governor, which is gear driven from the turbine shaft.
The output pressure of the oil from the governor is
between 2.0 kg/cm2g and 4.0kg/cm2g.
Trip Oil Circuit
 The trip oil circuit contains four trips, each of which will dump
the trip oil to lube oil sump and shut down the two valves
mentioned above.
The trip are
 An electrically operated solenoid valve, activated by push
button in the control room or any axial displacement probe.
 A 3 way, hand operated, dump cock valve located on the
turbine.
 A relay, held open by the pressure of the lube oil circuit,
which will dump the trip oil when the lube oil pressures falls
to 1.0kg/cm2g.
 An over speed centrifugal trip in the turbine shaft.
101-J Start Up
 Start lube oil circulation
 Control oil pressure8 bar & Lube oil pressure 2 bar
 Slight open the filling valve to overhead tank until oil
can be seen in return sight glass. Close the filling valve
again
 Check the oil pressure at bearings, adjust with regulator
if required.
 Put the auxiliary pump on auto.
 Adjust the oil temp by adjusting cooling water valves.
Start Up Of 101-JT

 Check proper function of emergency tripping device and

emergency stop valve.
 Open cooling water to compressor interstage cooler.
 Open FIC-101 fully and its by pass.
 Open fully inter stage vent.
 The purges at water cooler traps should be cracked open and
close after water stops to coming out.
 Latch automatic tripping device.
 Confirm turbine exhaust valve is fill open.
 When turbine is hot and live steam line has sufficiently
drained dry steam is coming out. Close all drains except
turbine casing.
 Start opening throttle valve & watch pressure on trip oil
gauge.
 Turn starting device more and see control oil pressure. Adjust
speed at 1000 rpm.
 Wait for 20 min as per ramp-up chart.
 Open seal steam on hand control
 Increase the speed to 2200 rpm (HPC 4626) & close all
drains.
 Wait 15 min at 2200 rpm.
 If all parameters are ok then very quickly pass the critical
speed of both turbine & compressor i.e. 2500 -4500 (HPC
4926 -10075 RPM) as per 101-J ramp up chart.
 Increase the speed up to MGS as per 101-J start up chart.
 Close the LPC intermediate vent valve slowly & also
observe vibration & sound level at that time.
 During closing of FIC 101, close observe anti-surge set
point ( not less than 7.0 root )
 Take the speed control on MIC 101.
 Increase the speed through MIC 101 as per ramp-up chart.
EMERGENCY HANDLING OF 101-J
1. Surging of compressor
Causes
 Uneven running of machine
 FIC 101 controller adjustment out
 FIC 101 valve jammed
 Bypass valve is closed
 Valve in pressure line (FRC-102) is closed.
 Instt-tubing leakage
Remedial Action
 Surge limit control, consisting of valve governor, impulse
transmitter and electric system to be checked.
 Immediately open FIC-101 or its by pass valve.
2. Discharge Temp Too High
Causes
 Compressor is sucking in gas which is too hot
 In sufficient cooling in intercoolers
 Internal labyrinth leakages.
Remedial Actors
 Check flow of cooling water
 Check surge limit valve
 Check turbine exhaust temp
3. Axial displacement of rotor
Causes
 Oil supply disturbance to thrust beaming.
 Oil temp too high.
 Surging of compressor.
 Rotor displacement.
 Discharge flow restriction.
 Sudden anti surge valve opening.

Remedial Action
 Check the pressure ratio (suction and discharge pressure)
 Check the temp at thrust bearing and the return oil in sight glass
 Check surge limit control valve and its by pass valve position.
4. Bearing Temp Too High
Causes
 Bearing damage
 Bearing clearance too small
 Bearing oil pressure too high or low
 Moisture in oil
Remedial
 Adjust oil pressure
 Apply centrifuge or oil console
5. Oil Console Too Low Level
Causes
 Leakage in oil system
 Oil cooler tube leakage
Remedial
 Change over the faulty oil cooler
 Check oil supply lines for leaks
