Introduction
Rationale

Solid waste management is a critical issue in our barangay, affecting environmental quality,
public health, and community aesthetics. Improper waste disposal can lead to pollution, attract
pests, and create unsanitary conditions. Effective waste management practices are essential
to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all residents. This project aims to involve
students in the process of identifying, analyzing, and solving the solid waste management
challenges in our barangay, fostering a sense of responsibility and civic engagement.

Goal

The goal of this project is to develop and implement a comprehensive solid waste
management plan in our barangay. This plan will include strategies for waste reduction, proper
disposal, recycling, and community education. By engaging students in this initiative, we aim
to create sustainable waste management practices that will benefit the community in the long
term.

II. Action Planning

A. Solution Identification

1. Issue Analysis:
o Engaging the community through surveys and interviews to understand their
current waste management practices and challenges.
o Researching best practices in solid waste management from other communities.
2. Brainstorming Solutions:
o Arranging brainstorming sessions to generate ideas for enhancing waste
management.
o Considering solutions such as waste segregation at source, community
composting, and recycling programs.
3. Feasibility Study:
o Identifying potential barriers to implementation and strategies to overcome them.
o Assessing the practicality and cost-effectiveness of proposed solutions.
4. Action Plan Development:
o Choosing the most feasible solutions and devising a detailed action plan.
o Defining roles and responsibilities for students and community members

B. Timeline

1. Short-term:
o Weeks 1-2: Conduct initial research, surveys, and data collection.
o Weeks 3-4: Facilitate brainstorming sessions and conduct feasibility studies.
o Week 5: Develop a detailed action plan.
o Weeks 6-8: Start early implementation steps like setting up waste
segregation bins and launching community education campaigns.
2. Long-term:
o Months 2-3: Execute comprehensive waste segregation and recycling
programs.
o Month 4: Start community composting projects.
o Month 5: Review progress mid-project and make any necessary
adjustments.
o Month 6: Complete full implementation and start final assessment.

C. Evaluation

1. Baseline Data Collection:

o Assess the current volume of waste generated and inadequately
disposed of.
o Evaluate the existing levels of recycling and composting in the
community.
2. Ongoing Monitoring:
o Regularly track waste reduction, recycling rates, and participation levels
to stay updated.
o Assess the effectiveness of community education campaigns to
determine their impact.
3. Final Assessment:
o Assess the comprehensive impact of the waste management plan six
months later.
o Assess improvements by comparing the current waste levels with the
initial data.

Possible metrics might include:

• Waste Reduction: Decrease in the percentage of total waste generated.

• Recycling Rates: Increase in the volume of materials recycled.
• Community Engagement: Number of residents participating in waste
management programs.
• Cost Savings: Financial benefits realized from reduced waste disposal costs
and revenue from recycled materials.

These metrics will provide insights into the effectiveness of the waste management
plan and highlight areas for future improvement.
